Les Mis

Wow, I'd forgotten how slashy that show can be.

I'm sort of entirely in it for the stuff where Jean Valjean and Javert have their little singing arguments.

Anyway, wow, GREAT voices in this.

Javert. Javert.... aie. It's performances like this that make me glad I'm not a man because my life would revolve around lamenting not having just that much charisma, and I come with a lot of charisma as is.

"Castle on a Cloud" is still the most annoying song in the world.

And poor little Gavroche almost didn't manage to climb the baracde -- ah, previews.

Javert's suicide was not as effective as in the first NYC production, but then that actor was a dancer and they were able to choreograph it better. This guy isn't.

But seriously, the voices! To rant about the good guy for a second, Bring Him Home was astounding. You could hear the audience holding its breath!

Speaking of audiences: cute little girl behind us asking "is that Cosette?" every time a woman appeared on stage until it actually was Cosette -- cute.

Woman sitting next to me singign along, not just with the rousing large group call to revolution chorus things so that I couldn't realyl entirely notice her, but with theme music no one on stage was singing to? SHUT THE FUCK UP! If I ever commit murder, it will surely be at the theatre.

Anyway, we're both sniffly, so it's to bed!

*giggle* I'm so the sort of person who would sing along during a musical without realizing it. I saw Les Mis on Broadway, um... God, like 13 or 14 years ago, when I was a freshman in high school. I just cried and cried, I loved it so much. I know all the songs by heart. However, in my opinion, the entire show is all about "On My Own." OH MY GOD, that song!

Ah the power of Les Mis. I saw it in London in 2000, and I'd love to see it in NYC. I guess I should look it up and see who is playing who.

Was he a dancer? I have always just seen Javert standing there while the bridge was flown out and then sort of floundering off stage in time with the swirling.

I saw it in London, and there was a stage trapdoor; Javert jumps off the bridge into infinity. Nice and simple. (Also, giant rotating stage with some gorgeous bits of marching-around-the-neighborhood made possible by rotating.)

And of course there's no parallels between Snape and Javert. Oh no. We love our doubting maybe-not-villains. Although there's also something a little too damn obvious to be said for the alto who gets shot, in terms of what I identify with - or certainly did at the time.

There will be several of us in for committing murder at the theater, trust me.

heh. I sealed my fate as a freak when i sang that at my 8th grade class talent show. they applauded politely, and then later said, "um, S, that was weird. not a song you should sing. not that you sang it badly, but not a song you should sing."

as in, you could never be in love, and we don't know that song, so it's weird.

Remember there is a special hell for those who talk in theatres :)

I love Les Mis. I was so disappointed to learn that my husband dislikes it. I love Eponine's songs.

People just have a hard time understanding performances that are risky, and show real emotion. ESPECIALLY kids.

I was a "freak" through most of my schoolage years. I knew I was weird, and couldn't quite fit in, but I tried, and no matter how I tried, I was always WEEEEIRD. I've found that people like me a lot better now that I actually embrace my weirdness. Ya know?

I think there would be a whole prison full of those who commit murder in the theater, other than the fact that most educated juries consider justifiable homicide.

I agree, justifiable homicide. I'd hang that jury rather than convict.

Loved Les Mis! Cried like a baby. *I* didn't want to ruin the show for people sitting around me and tried not to make any noise, but ended up sobbing out loud anyway.

This is true, but the guy who originated the role in NYC was Terence Mann who is an amazing dancer, and so what was floundering off stage last night, was amazing and perfect and convincing as what it was meant to be when he performed it.

Hah. I was wearing my Snape coat last night because it was seasonlly and appropriate and I did feel a little weird about that.

I have a whole post on that song all by its lonesome.

oh, believe me, I know. When I went off to college, I chose one where I was the poster child for normality. Now that I'm ostensibly a grownup, I have built a life where I intereact almost exclusively with other weird people, and I'm happy.

Oh, I'm glad you think about Valjean/Javert too! I thought it was Wrong of me to think of those parts with all that angry, slow, deliberate passion as hot.

Also, I will someday commit murder at a piano concert. During certain pieces, even a sneeze will earn you a death glare!
