A friend sent me a CD that has on it Holst's Jupiter. I know I know this piece of music from somewhere, but I can't figure it out. The liner notes mention that it was in an Aussie TV commercial, but I'm fairly sure I've not seen that (I can't be entirely sure, because my dad's in advertising, and watching tapes and programs of international TV commercials is something I've been doing my entire life).

My brain seems to be telling me it was actually used in the score of an American western at some point.

Yes, no, maybe?

One of you has to know, before this drives me entirely batty.

the english know (part of) it as the hymn "i vow to thee my country" which was apparently princess diana's favourite hymn. an adulterated form of that same part was used in d.j. sakin's "protect your mind".

i doubt either of these are what you were thinking of :-)

While it doesn't solve my rather intense curiosity, it does at least confirm for me that this thing, or something similar to it, is everywhere, and someone is eventually going to have the answer I want.

Heh.

the b eginning of "jupiter" is used all over- i've heard it as radio talk show host themes, in tv commercials, in movies. it also sounds like half the stuff that john williams stole (oops..WROTE) for most of the 'star wars' movies.

It was also the theme for Rupert Everett's movie Another Country :O)

I've never even heard of that.

I'm utterly convinced it was in an American western, probably from the 60s, and it's going to drive me crazy until I figure it out.

The hymn was sung at Diana's funeral, if that helps. It's also been sung by a number of popranos (pop sopranos -- the Sarah Brightmans of the music scene).

It gets used as temp scoring for trailers- although not nearly as often as the Mars section- and it was excerpted in the score for The Right Stuff, as well as being adapted in a section of James Horner's score for Braveheart. Dunno about the Western, though.

Also, the American Cinematographer Moulin Rouge issue awaits you on your return.n
