Meat

What the fuck was up with Jack? Between his emotional response to the creature, which I really liked (also note his calling it "friend" -- Face of Boe moment for me), to his wacked out moodiness about Gwen -- he was just so fragile all episode. What the hell?

Also all the looks everyone gave everyone else during the "well, it's impossible to have a relationship and work at Torchwood" was really funny. Ianto and his beer! And Jack's smug little nod at him!

And then Jack being all telling Gwen she can stand down because she loves Rhys and that's difficult and it's like oh, right, Jack, you're special, you're the only one who can deal with people you care about being in danger -- like I get that Jack has this long string of war-time boyfriends behind him, but way to go asshole with the doublestandard. I imagine Ianto was not impressed.

The creature was very very sad and very very disturbing.

Can I ask if there is a particular reason why you do not mention the episode title in your reviews? I watched these episodes when they screened in the UK, and it always takes me a few moments to figure out from the context you give which one you're talking about.

I've been putting it in the cut tag. I suppose I could type it too.

Ah. That would explain much.

I use Firefox's LJ Addons extension, and it opens all the unread posts on my flist into new tabs whenever I come to check my flist-- making everyone's cut tags invisible to me.

This was the episode that made me decide that Jack had a normalcy fetish. I think that's why he's fascinated by Gwen.

That _mostly_ makes sense to me, because of the immortality and the way that totally fucks with normal relationships. But Jack was a slut and a cad (by our standards and it seems that of the 51st century's -- I mean that shit with John?) long before that happened. Or did the immortality thing give him the normalcy fetish and before that he couldn't have given less of a damn about such things?

I don't think he cared as much about normalcy before he became immortal. He probably just would have thought of it as boring before. But I would think that over time, the experience of being immortal would have to change your point of view on things. He's clearly a person who gets attached to people, even if he doesn't do the monogamy thing, and he'd have had to watch people he cared about die time and time again. So I think the seeming security of marriage would have a certain appeal to him, even if it's not something he could really participate in himself. But he can fantasize about it when looking at it from the outside.
