wall street

Dow down 500. We're below the 10K mark, which is one of those psychological barriers that will fuck sentiment up for the rest of the week.

i've been working internally with some of the movers on these things and...it's ugly out there but not in the way the average person thinks. i have all kinds of non-disclosures on me though, so that's all i'll say.

*nod* I only see what's in the papers, but I see so much of it, that I feel like I have half a sense of what's actually going on. I do feel like the the full scope of this is going to take years to show itself.

Yeah, watching the stuff go on now, like the fight over Wachovia? Is that really as sickly a company as they say given this? I know there's a lot more behind the scenes, meh.

The 10K is an amusing one to me, though. I was roundly laughed out of my economics class in high school for saying it would break 6K sometime...

Fun timely fact: Kevin Hassett, the author of Dow 36000: The New Strategy for Profiting From the Coming Rise In the Stock Market, is a McCain adviser.

I was going to short AAPL last week. Dang.

I did use this opportunity to buy a little more a railroad stock I like. Trying to be contrarian to match my *lovely* personality.

Everyone at work is freaking out. I tell them - we know so little about the financial markets. As someone who's worked in tech for 14 years I know *not* to invest in tech. Most of it is vaporware - regardless if it's s/w or h/w.

Hooray for dollar-cost averaging! I figure that in a couple of months I'll be buying entire companies with my 403(b) contributions.

Intriguing to compare the Dow's progress (regress?) with that of some of its opposite numbers elsewhere. In sheer points terms it's dropped more than the FTSE 100, and yet percentage-wise the London exchange is in the worse shape right now.

The Paris Cac 40 is apparently down nearly 10%.

yeah, getting to be the proverbial fly on the wall of some of these boardroom meetings is an education i don't know if i really want to be experiencing or not. i'd just remind that what's in the media is meant to bring out a certain response (i.e. panic!) that isn't entirely justified. statistically, things aren't even remotely as bad as they were in the mid, late 80s. but that being said, these are strange days and likely will be for...oh, "years" isn't a bad way of putting it. but not many.

Economy=terrible. Are you noticing it trickle down to Film/TV? My booking just changed to a half day for a daytime show that I work semi-regularly.

Ugh.

And the upcoming election is giving me heart palpitations.

The price of oil is down to 88.49, niiiiice. I'm also seeing my favorite car rental places drop their prices accordingly, a day rate of $112 is now around $87.
