Date: 2009-08-04 02:43 pm (UTC)It's a bio of someone who was either a woman living as a man, a transman or an intersexed individual -- it's not clear both because of the lacking historical record in places and the lack of use of current identifiers. Anyway, the life story is fucking ASTOUNDING the book began as a dissertation, so it has a lot of academic references of use. There's a good chunk in the middle that talks about the ideal of male beauty at the time (which was basically "woman with a brain") and how that made it somewhat easy in some ways for a woman to pass. There's also a lot of stuff on the history of women passing as men to join the military and why this stuff happened and how people got away with it.

(this is light, not perfectly written and mpreg, but I really enjoyed it, as it has moments that really nail human nature).

(also in the flawed but interesting category).
There was another one, and I can't remember who wrote it now -- someone on my friendlist that was just a character study, Jack/Ianto in bed being half asleep thing that I loved.... will link if I find again.
