While Ianto's death gets the most noise in terms of people coping with their reactions to Torchwood: Children of Earth, Jack's actions in Day 5 fucked a lot of people up. The storyline was gutting, sure, but it also recalibrated how many of us had probably come to think of Jack: here he was darker, more broken, and arguably more cowardly than we'd seen before. It shouldn't have been a surprise, not really; certainly, references to Jack's rather inglorious past are all over Torchwood and Doctor Who, but for a lot of us, Jack's arc was about watching him try to become a better man. But a few years is nothing in the face of nearly forever, and Jack has all the time in the world to fuck up, or at least to make nearly inhuman choices.
Anyway, here's the story you need to read if you came out of Children of Earth hating Jack, or, if you're as crazy as I am, hating yourself:

Not remotely a fix-it, but it does, in fact, make it way better.
