Even The Empire Strikes back managed to avoid the mechanical 'Oh,yeah, I love you, too." by some twist of luck.

While I take issue with the fact that the death scene happened at all, insofar as it did happen, I think it was extremely well written.

I know people who were very upset about Wash dying in Serenity. But they also agreed that is was important to the story, to creating jeopardy, the emotional possibility that *everyone* would die.
Now *that* would have been quite the ending, eh?
Final shot of Mal is from behind. The Operative's sword comes out the front of his chest just as he triggers the braodwave. Lots of sad looks as the ones left on the "tunnel" all die, watching each other fade as they do each other in to avoid the Reavers. The only survivor is River, who the Alliance still call crazy so no one believes her and she gets locked up and experimented on again.
Hope the rest of the Con goes smooth.

This whole "love you" thing reminds me of Xena and how batshit everyone got when she told Gabrielle "You've no idea how much I love . . . that" in a crucial scene of an early ep. SO MUCH more fun to be had by torturing the audience.
