I kind of LOL at these fashion articles in the NYT lately. Are they written by 23-year-olds who don't remember the grunge era, when even the chicas wore plaid shirts and scullcaps and boy jeans, FOR YEARS? And boys were wearing eyeliner in the 80s like Duran Duran.

OMG it's so groundbreaking! :D

Re the ambiguous style, basically this:

“To carry it off, you need the physique of an adolescent boy.”

Which esentially means that young men and slender women (of a wider age range) can do it, but no one else. Adult men with sholders and bulk cannot, (see all the 'slim' look pants they're talking about?) and women with curves/weight cannot do it easily. It isnt' really ambiguous, it's another ieteration of the youth focused style/culture we have going on in this country; it's about looking like that adolsecent boy - an image that has been persued for decades.

You've got a flat belly ad.

Text: "1 Tip of a flat belly: Cut down 3lbs of your belly every week by using this 1 weird old tip."

This bit is pretty WTF What Dr. Ehrensaft has dubbed “gender fluidity” remains in her view a form of rebellion.

The one bit I liked from the gender fluidity piece was:

Ms. Reynolds, 25, who wore a slouchy biker jacket and beat-up clog boots, insisted: “Every line should be unisex. A good piece of clothing is a good piece of clothing no matter who was meant to wear it in the first place.”

I completely agree. Finding jeweltone silk shirts that actually fit me is always a challenge.

Okay. Feeling my age now. Those fashions that are so new and ground breaking in their androgyny? That is how we dressed, both men and women, at uni in the late 80s. Identically to the outfits in the audio slideshow.
