  • Food yesterday: 1 cherry bakewell tart without the maraschino cherry (which I gave to Patty because I think they are gross), 1 vitamin water (defense flavor), 1 fruit roll-up, 9 mini chicken tacos with salsa, 1 strawberry frozen yogurt with chocolate sprinkles and coconut, a handful of chocolate covered pomegranate jelly candies, 1 slice of swiss cheese, 1 slide of cheddar cheese, 2.5 bratwursts with mustard (no bun), spinach cooked with garlic, shallots and sweet peppers, 1 glass of apple raspberry juice, more of the pomegranate candies.

  • Poor Patty has jury duty today.

  • If you want an abortion in Okalahoma, even if you've been raped, you will now need to watch an ultrasound of your pregnancy and basically be told how cute your baby is. Not cool.

  • Lovely article from a straight, cis-woman engaged to a transman that gets to so many things about gender and love and expectations and everything else. via [livejournal.com profile] usullusa.

  • Mississippi high school pretends that lesbian who wore a tux in her senior photo never existed. The school claims there is legal precedent to support its decision.

  • Haiti, now that we've started to forget.

  • New York City as a lab for nearly-lost languages.

  • I'm messing around with ad.ly in Twitter. We'll see if it's good/evil/weird/useful. I do like that I can approve or deny each individual advertiser, versus just the category battles I have with Adsense.

  • Last night it was back to Angel Yet again, the guy who plays Wesley is such a good actor. I feel like he got cast in Buffy because he was funny and looked just right for the part and then they discovered he was AMAZING and he sort of became the go to guy when the whole thing with Glenn Quinn went down. Because SO AWESOME. He can turn on a fucking dime.

Meanwhile, the problem with the Darla plotline is that I don't actually care about her, nor do I care about Angel's obsession with her. I do care about Wes and Cordelia having to put up with Angel's obsession with her, however.

I thought "The Trial" was extremely well done, but in the last test thought it got kind of obvious. Of course it was about accepting death to win life. Whether that was the right call (eventhough it worked) for Angel to make though is highly debatable. The tester wasn't wrong that Angel probably has a greater contribution to make and while a man can't decide who's life is more valuable, someone who is Leading a Team Against Evil -- well that's his fucking job, you know? But that all worked out.

EXCEPT IT DIDN'T! Holy crap, I thought Darla accepting the symmetry of her life and death was so lovely and then fucking Dru shows up! Holy crap.

Also: I hate Cordy's new haircut, but the Wolfram & Hart slimeball's new haircut is awesome sauce.

Finally: Why is David Boreanaz a better actor when he's playing Angel acting, than when he's just playing Angel?

Actually, I think Anthony Stewart Head recommended him. They'd worked together in Rope (with John Barrowman) and he was in LA and struggling for work at the same time Joss needed someone who could do an English accent.

He was supposed to die in Buffy, but they couldn't bring themselves to do it.

That's an even more awesome story than my theory. Man, he's SO AWESOME. And I'm so glad they didn't kill him off.

It all connects to Barrowman, huh?

He really is awesome! And the story is even better when you know that he met his wife on Buffy.

    Heh.

I actually knew that. Patty has definitely given me some of the Buffy gossip.

Alexis Denisof is awesome. And it always makes me smile a little when I think that one of his first jobs was leading man in a George Harrison music video. Blowing a significant amount of cash to win a toy ballerina for his lady-love - rather than just finding one like it and buying one for her - just strikes me as a very Wesley thing to do.

Well, Angel's overall arc is about redemption, about making up for the horrible things he did as a vampire. So whatever he does as Leader of the Good Guys... if he dies saving Darla and giving HER a chance for redemption, that could be HIS redemption. Angel logic. :)

Good, isn't it? And the show is so good at doing that!

Also very much agreed on Wesley. He and Spike - as lots of people have pointed out - have the most interesting arcs, and both actors are absolutely excellent.

ETA: Meant to say thank you for the link to the Oprah article. Touching and wonderful!

That Oprah article about the girl and her transman fiance was bloody ADORABLE. So much bless - cheers for that link.

And YAY for the Wesley enthusiasm! Alexis Denisof is absolutely my favourite, he really is - dear HEAVENS, that man is versatile, and his English accent is superb. (I get a terrible cognitive dissonance whenever I hear him speaking in his real voice. So wrong!)

Aww...you don't like the Darla plotline, though? I'm much fonder of the Darla/Angel backstory than I am of the Buffy/Angel schtick - I loved the way that reintroducing Darla turned that whole Buffy/Angel thing on its head, and made it Angel working through his Darla issues by getting stalkerly obsessive about another cute little blonde chick who could kick his ass into the middle of next week. And she loves him, in her evil, fucked up fashion - "God doesn't want you, but I still do." Aww, Darla. I loved what Julie Benz brought to the table, and that she was the first person we ever saw on BtVS, faking us out with the possibility that she would be Buffy, or a victim, and actually being the vampire who chomps on the schoolboy.

And now we get the Darla/Drusilla double act, for which I have a terribly soft spot. I &hearts Dru, Dick Van Dyke accent and all.

Beautiful article! Thank you so much for posting it.

Re: Alexis Denisof, just an amazing actor. Did you know that in Buffy, when the battle with the snake-mayor went down, Wesley getting taken out in the first moment was the actor's idea? Whedon asked him if he would like Wesley to finally have his moment of bravery and cool, and Denisof said he thought it would be much funnier if Wesley got smacked down in the first wave and spent the rest of the fight whimpering. How many actors have the instincts and the lack of ego for something like that?

Also did you know that Denisof did a play in England years ago with Anthony Stewart Head and John Barrowman?

Your food lists are proof positive that I will probably never weigh much less than I do now. I think I eat that much before noon each day. Now clearly, I weigh significantly more than you and so NEED to take in more just to function, but still.

Today I've had: 1 can of pomegranate seltzer, 1 large banana, 4 oz. cottage cheese, 1 Fiber One bar. I've got a PB&J in my bag for lunch as well as a few ounces of cut up strawberries and blackberries as well as one of those Dole fruit cup thingies.

Also, how were you born with the self-restraint to eat like 2 pieces of cheese? I'm CERTAIN my love of cheese came from the Sicilian side of the family!!!

Depends on the type of cheese! Mozzarella and I'm doomed. Part of the problem is also that celiac disease has impact on the ability to digest fat, so a lot of cheese really screws up my body now in a way that it didn't used to. Cheese and wheat are about the only things I have food restraint on, and it's only because I have to.

It's one of the reasons celiac disease is often first misdiagnosed as gallbladder disease.

Thank you for the article on the trans couple. Just lovely.

Wish I could love Wesley's character as much as you do. I did, once. Though Alexis always does fine work. And his arc is fascinating.

That yearbook article makes me fume! WTF! What is the problem with her wearing a tux? Why would anybody care? Its her friggin picture - would it spoil the yearbook for everyone else if the picture was included? One tiny little picture..I really don't understand this at all. Its so petty and mean spirited that I really can't get my mind around it. Excuse me while my head explodes.
