No idea w/r/t Jon Stewart's beard, but maybe he's trying to compensate for going gray à la Philip Swallow in David Lodge's Small World.

Or maybe he's trying to be Stephen Colbert's Bearded Nemesis. Has he been stroking said facial follicles a lot going "mweh heh heh..."?
