  • Today is the final, final, final day to bid at [livejournal.com profile] graduate_maria. Bidding closes at 11:59pm. These are the items that need more love, but several other auctions remain open as well.

  • Dragon*Con schedule: I has it.

  • Lease renewal came. All is essentially well, but there's one stupid thing I have to call them about. It's only going up by like $30, which means we're still below where we were when they dropped the rent last year.

  • Ice-skating fail. Johnny Weir is the subject. And this time Lysacek is the asshole.

  • [livejournal.com profile] eredien rebuts, quite amusingly, appalling opinion piece in The CSM on Prop 8. Basically the opinion piece asserts that women lack value and safety without a marriage institution whose sole purpose is to legitimize their existence, provide them with freedom and protect them from rape. Yeah, I'm confused too.

  • Department of passive aggression, item #1: I'm so fucking sorry my celiac disease doesn't occur as frequently as hoarding in the population and you're sick of hearing about issues related to gluten. I'm such an inconvenience, I know!

  • Department of passive aggression, item #2: OMG, do you hear yourself?

  • Hey, my warranty on my MacBook Pro expires in about 10 days. Should I get AppleCare?

  • Also, one-day single-stick workshop through my old salle with a master I like: should I or is it just all messy, even if only in my head?

  • Last night on Buffy and Angel:

Over on Angel: Willow and Fred have got it going on! And Wesley's all "hrmmm, Willow's hot, but how dare she flirt with Fred? Maybe we could have a threesome" and Willow's all "Hey, Wesley, keeping girl in the closet? HOT! but I'm totally dating someone even if I'm totally going to flirt with Fred EVEN MORE." Angel, thankfully, has his soul back, and Connor is still an idiot. Where'd Cordy get her evil dress from? Because that shit? Is absurd.

OH my fucking god Nathan Fillion. At first I was like "I'm not buying him as a preacher" and then I was all "I am totally buying him as an evil preacher" and then I kept laughing because all I could think of was a story from Dragon*Con involving a lot of booze and various celebrities being post-verbal because of it. OH MY GOD, NATHAN FILLION, WHAT THE FUCK?

    re the CSM piece:
"That’s why it has never occurred before to lawmakers (or any human society of which I am aware) to offer marriage to pairs of lovers that happen not to include a woman, or that involve only women and not a man."

Research: ur doin it rong. There are many societies that have been documented that allowed same-sex marriages.

The photo of 2 dogs in wedding costumes next to the piece makes it extra special.

Lysacek is OFTEN the asshole. He's a
    vain and preening
asshole, and when I met him after Stars on Ice a few months ago, I thought he was a real dick. He acted like he was too good to be there. So this? So does not surprise.

(OK, Johnny often acts like a prima donna, but when I met HIM after an exhibition, he was just as gracious and sweet as could be. So I can give him a pass on his snottiness about his skating. He really IS that good.)

I just bought a MacBook Pro worked out the following with respect to AppleCare with some help from my computer-repairing brother. The two parts that could fail whose price exceeds that of AppleCare are the display and the logic board, both of which run $600+ for the part, never mind labor if you don't do it yourself. (He had a number for the failure rate, but I've forgotten it.) I guess at that point most people buy a new computer, rather than repair it. We decided the decision came down to how disastrous do you view having to buy a new computer within 3 years.

I had a hard time with the first few episodes of Firefly because I couldn't believe Nathan Fillion as not evil. I don't think my roommate at the time ever quite got over the "Holy shit Caleb!" reaction.

Yes, get AppleCare. I've only needed to use it once but between replacement part + labor + not breaking things going the DIY route it was totally worth it.

I'd say go for the AppleCare warranty. It made my life muuuch easier when my computer broke.

I've had AppleCare for both my Macbooks and I've never regretted getting it. If there's a problem, it makes it incredibly simple to fix, and I think failure of expensive parts (e.g. the logic board, the display, the topcase) is actually pretty common. It's worth it for peace of mind alone; if something goes wrong, you're covered, and you don't have to worry about doing it yourself or finding/paying for repairs.

AppleCare is definitely worth it if you don't have the ready means for major repairs or replacement. Most Macs are very reliable and don't fail often. in my experience. But occasionally there's a lemon, or one that develops a series of problems after a few years. Better safe than sorry, IMO, especially if you aren't in a position to rely on your workplace IT help desk to diagnose and fix it for you for free or cheap.

Oh boy, you got to Caleb's eps! Eeeevil Nathan Fillion is pretty awesome.

I'm sad I can't go to D*C this year. I'll miss seeing you and the usual suspects there.

Schulman's piece pissed me off. Like, really, heterosexual marriage is needed to protect women from rape, even though many people (and laws) believe that a husband can do whatever to his wife but it's not rape? *voms*

And like rapists check for wedding rings first. And like anyone in countries with gay marriage actually tries to "turn women into slaves or concubines" if they're married lesbians. idek.

I recommend Applecare. My hard-drive recently failed on my MacBook Air. No explanation, it was just suddenly inaccessible and all the data was irretrievable. I got my computer in the spring of 2008, so the warranty was expired. Apple gave me a whole brand new computer. Without Applecare, I would have been simply without a computer, for I surely cannot afford another.

Well, that's exactly how it works! Women are "protected" from rape by giving the man most likely to rape them tacit permission to do whatever he wants. :(

I'm assuming you know that Alyson Hannigan & Alexis Denisof are married and were engaged by this point? Anyway, I'm amused because I'm not actually this far in Angel. Still stuck in season 2!

Also, I am completely unable to buy Nathan Fillion as Not Evil. This is part of why I have never been able to get into Firefly.

Yeahhh, I'd be lying if I said that preacher!Fillion didn't scare the shit out of me. No one else seems to remember him all that much as a villain, but the most coherent thought I had while I was watching was something like, "Holy fffahh oh god what but how MAL REYNOLDS nooooo."

The Lysacek thing pisses me off, because I really like him as an athlete. Why does he have to be such an ass off the ice?!

Weir, on the other hand, seems to have a lot of class, on and off the ice.

[livejournal.com profile] eridien's essay is brilliant. She didn't mention the most amusing bit of cluelessness: marriage, even today, is about control of property and inheritance. Until recently (in the West), that included the bride herself.

...so much for independence and dignity and respect for the woman, eh?

(Why does it never occur to these people to consult with actual anthropologists before spewing their ahistorical BS?)

Same here. He was the cigarette-lighter-to-the-face that really tipped the series for me, from "let's make some nice metaphors for issues with monsters as standins" to "this kind of shit happens to women in cars."

Hehe, I saw Nathan Fillion on Buffy before I watched Firefly, and even though season 7 is probably my least favorite, Caleb is deliciously evil.

I LOVE Frillow. Freslow...that could be interesting given that Weslow (yeah, smack me whenever you like) is real life.
