Honestly, some of the time that is a very accurate description. I am well aware of the genre's shortcomings. I think a lot of the reaction is related to the show's cancellation as well - it's a very abrupt ending, apparently.

I prefer the new approach where they just recast and don't make a big deal out of it. Far less weird than dying and coming back or plastic surgery!
