I enjoyed this piece a lot but want more! :-) I've been involved for many years with our local science fiction conventions musical. This year I co-directed it. Being so informal no one person really directs it but for a few years, I've pretty much been managing the process of writing, casting and producing the show. Granted, it's a one off, informal, no-budget, all volunteer, just-for-fun thing that seems to pack the room (one of the largest) every year. And I learned, just this year, that several people attend our con solely for this show.
I've also performed in my third Gilbert and Sullivan production. I have to say, I learned some from from observing the directors I've worked. None of this has really clued me in to what directing is or if I can even call anything I've done directing. But I am curious to learn more about it so that I can be better at both helping with the musical and performing.
