I mentioned In Academia (which, as a warning or possibly an enticement, includes all sorts of NC-17 stuff, about 8 zillion pairings and some non-con, and occassionally almost veres into crack!fic and yet doesn't) to Kali last night, for whatever reason. I think it branches from Book 4 -- and certainly I've not read it since it got written, so it's been ages. I've been rereading it today, and I'd forgotten how much of it I'd forgotten. I'd forgotten that it was one of those weird Indian versions of Snape (there was a rash of those for a little while, reasons unknown), and one imagines the probably dubious use of Hindi in the piece will drive Kali up the wall, but if JKR can mangle Latin, hell, let the fic writers munge up the rest of human language. It's also one of the least charitable portrayals of Snape out there, and blindingly far from anything I've ever written. But even having just reacquainted myself with its flaws and things not to my general taste... something about it sticks to me. I'm not sure there's a fic I've done more crying to, except perhaps stuff I've penned or am penning. Yes, there have been some moments of late.

Quiet day. Cold, rainy, lots of goblin music.

My stomach is a bit tempermental, but I seem to have avoided death by raw chicken.

Aren't you excited?
My copy of Lucie Brock-Broido's A Hunger arrived today. This is her first book of poems, and it shows. These are young poems, well late-20s poems, full of a certain sort of sly.

And some of them are brilliant.

This is a segment from Domestic Mysticism:

This work of mine, the kind of work which takes no arms to do,
Is least noble of all. It's peopled by Wizards, the Forlorn,
The Awkward, the Blinkers, the Spoon-Fingered, Agnostic Lispers,
Stutterers of Prayer, the Flatulent, the Closet Weepers,
The Charlatans. I am one of those. In January, the month the owls
Nest in, I am a witness & a small thing altogether. The Kingdom
of Ingratitude. Kingdom of Lies. Kingdom of How Dare I.
