signal boosting
Jun. 2nd, 2011 06:12 pmChristian (
bodlon) is one of those fandom people I met at a con. Dragon*Con to be precise. A very, very wonky Dragon*Con with a bucket of in jokes that left us both bystanders to some stuff that we didn't know whether to be jealous of or deeply relieved to have been only peripherally involved in.
In its way, that sort of sums up our friendship. We see each other at cons and we witness shenanigans while we try to figure out which side of the table we're on. We both have these creatively complex, boundary blurring pro and fannish lives that happen in public for better or for worse.
Neither of us necessarily know what we're doing, but sometimes we get to do it together. Sometimes that means being on panels at cons, sometimes that means "OH MY GOD THIS IS MY 36th EDIT OF THIS FUCKING STORY, HELP!" and sometimes that means "Hey, wanna read this really porny Glee wingfic I found?"
I joke a lot that Christian's sort of my Internet boyfriend (in a platonic bromance-y way). Although we see each other a couple of times a year usually, we can't ever visit each other -- he'd die from cat allergies at my place, and he has big enthusiastic dogs that are beyond my ability to cope with. So he's just this dude I know in (if this were still the '90s) cyberspace. But he's one of my dearest friends.
Right now, he's on a mission to get his "top surgery" done. See, Christian's trans, and medical transition is expensive and totally not covered by insurance. So he's raising money to fund this thing (to the tune of needing at least 6K before his doctor can work with him to help finance the rest, which is over 3K more) every which way he can -- from doing Ebay auctions of stuff, to selling his fiction, to just asking for plain ol' Internet donations and signal boosting.
You can read his explanation and help if you are so inclined at his journal.
Thanks for reading.
