I don't remember when the change happened, either. I want to say it was because of 9/11, but it must've been before that. I only know that in other parts of the world, I don't remember non-passengers ever being able to amble up to the gate. The US was an anomaly for that, but alas no more. I rather miss meeting someone at the gate.
