People!

I got Winterlong world-building fic!

It is AMAZING.

I love Winterlong because it's about a place I used to live (Washington DC) in all its dark, primal, haunted feeling (really, DC has a lot of ghosts stories for a reason; the place feels other, and huge and powerful at night and it has very little to do with what we've built there), in some horrible ruined future where the past is, as the past always is, misunderstood: people believe the Egyptians built the Great Obelisk and they talk about how people pray to the Sorrowful Lincoln who watches over the Narrow Forest; a society of whores greats each other with the ASL sign for W pressed to their lips. It's just this great book, about dark post-apocalyptic things, with a hundred little in-jokes (that aren't funny at all) about a very weird place.

And ANYWAY, I got this fic that gets its poetry and hauntedness and is all about Death and mythology is just SO DAMN COOL.

Wow. I'm not worthy. So fucking fantastic. Thank you author!

Is this like a fanfic or an original story or a role-playing game or ...? Sorry, I don't understand :)

I got a fabulous book on DC ghost stories when I was there for an 8th grade field trip. I stayed in DC for all of 30 hours in college for an internship before I fled - I'm pretty sure the house I stayed in was haunted (that's not the reason I left though, the whole organization and my boss were sketchy). I've been to DC numerous times and always found it a strange city. The ghost stories I hear about the place don't surprise me.

I have been reading the book, and I can really see why you like it. The use of language really reminds me of how you write.

I've never heard of this book before, but it sounds like one I'd really enjoy. :)
