Benefit of living in the East Village:
Spectacular view of the Macy's fireworks while sitting in your window

Unfortunate consequence of living in the East Village:
High probability of not sleeping again until sometime in the middle of the week because it sounds like Zonko's exploded somewhere in the vacinity of 4th and C.

People are shooting off a lot of serious illegal crap, and all the M-80s are setting off all the car alarms which are making all the dogs howl, which are in turn causing peopel to lean out their windows and express their incredibly loud annoyance.

I'm almost charmed. But since I can really only hear out of one ear right now thanks to the above and my position in said window, not quite.

That's been going on in my 'hood in philly since Memorial Day Weekend. Some nights it sounds like the fall of Berlin.

Hope it gets better...

One of my most stereotypical images of New York is people leaning out of windows, or cars, telling other people to shut up. Maybe in an comic, (or completely stereotypical), Italian accent, "Shut up-a you face."

Contrast that with my building, where the sound carries up from the parking lot and makes people talking there sound like they are standing on the balcony talking. No one ever says anything. It's not like this is a violent neighbourhood, either. We're all just Canadian, I guess.

In my elegant and refined Bronx neighborhood, people shot off only a few fireworks as soon as the sun went down.

They saved their big stuff for 2 AM. With the same results listed above: dogs freaking and crying, car alarms going off, people shouting. One guy countered with blasts from his tuba.
