My mother called today to tell me my parents want to take me to the airport when I go to Australia.

My parents and I live several miles apart, and they do not own a car. This would be an immense clusterfuck, that would make my day of travel more difficult, and provide them with little satisfaction. Also, it's important to me that I do this journey the way I need to do it, and the journey to the airport, and that observation of my city from the car service, is a really critical part of it for me. I also can't deal with the stress that their phobia of never seeing me will induce.

Finally, they would not do this were I married, and really, they need to stop treating me as if I am not. Because while it is not as if I am, there's a certitude to my nature that doesn't want or need or know what to do with the sort of weird way people who view me as not fully formed for this particular reason. This last year has been about nothing if not committment, and I'll not have it doubted at such a key moment.

Let me guess: you'd have to get up there to their home with all your luggage, under your own power, and possibly arrange for the car to the airport as well?

On a trip that's this important, I'd say, "If you want to see me at the airport, that's one thing, but I'm going myself, thank you."

If you were married, and flying to meet your husband, would they feel the same need?

Hmmm... Can you play the good-daughter card by having dinner with them, say the weekend before you leave, and calling them from the airport once you get through security? If one or both have health issues, can you approach it as not wanting to aggravate any troubles they may have with the comedy of errors that is post 9/11 air travel? */Slytherin*

Well, pumpkin martinis await in the financial district once you've had enough of them.
