On one hand, this is a vague dissapointment to me, as Pullman has made a lot of noise about how he'd love to see Jason Isaacs do it (one imagines the committment to the new TV series and HP make that difficult if not impossible especially with the intention to shoot the three films back to back). And it's hard for me to get my head around the physical image of Bettany in the role, who in my mind has the right coloring for it, but doesn't take up nearly the space I've always thought Asriel must. Of course, Jason Isaacs doesn't really take up nearly the space that acting around children and the skills of the HP costumers make him seem to, so it's probably moot. For those who have read the books, I think the idea of Isaacs in the role was so interesting specifically because the man has always been vociferous and anything but genteel about his own politics, and watching him defend HDM (which is certain to enrage lots of people if they do it right) would certainly have been amusing.
For those who haven't read the books, Lord Asriel is not a villain (to correct an assumption made in the comments at the linked post). Merely, he has a very particular goal and no comprehenion that there should be limits in achieving it (rather, he's peripherally aware of this but can't figure out why he should care). One could even argue that the goal is altruistic, although his desiring of it is purely about his vanity and the matter of a certain interpersonal affair. The character largely has all the aspects we love in our villains, but to say he is rather largely misses Pullman's point.
