woah

I just got an email from someone saying they just read a story (origfic) by someone with my name in 1996, but it only has six chapters -- is there any more to it, etc. I wrote the story, I have no idea where they found it, but more importantly, I lost the piece in a computer crash years and years ago! Is it weird to ask them for a copy of my own work?

ETA, my reply:
Chris,

I'm an indeed the author of that story, and I'm just
stunned by this email. That story is one of my
personal favourites, but regrettably, I lost my own
personal copies of it in a computer crash many years
ago -- all I have are my handwritten notes for the
first chapter. They are people I had always intended
to return to, and, while I can't make any promises,
would love to do so. Is there any chance you could
either scan in what you have or xerox and send me a
copy? It would be a tremendous favour to me, and of
course, I'd be happy to reimburse you for any expense.
The Internet truly is a marvelous thing.

Best,

Racheline

Ask for a copy "just to confirm" that it is you and where they got it.

How cool. Keep us posted as the rest of this story unfolds...

I don't think it's odd - it's your work.

And just a side note, I liked what you wrote about in a previous post about the strongest person you know also needs a little help too at times. I've been that person all my life - sometimes it just nice to be picked for yourself and not a second prize behind anything else in the person your involved with in their life.

Absolutely not. I'd be totally candid with them, and thank them too.
