(no subject)
Well, no sleeping in for me tomorrow. A&G rehearsals start at 2pm and then I've school at 6. Which is just bloody fantastic other than the 6 to 12 inches of snow we're expecting.
Saw Def Poetry Jam tonight and was way more into than I thought I would be. I find that slam poetry can be predictable, in subject matter, style, rhythm and affectation and while some of that definitely cropped up, in some performers more than others, it was also funny, moving, right the fuck on, and surprising. And because it was a show where one just had to give in and go with it and be totally uncynical about it, I found a lot of charm and sweetness in it in places I didn't expect.
In the first half, there was a wonderful piece a guy did about pretending to be Michael Jackson, about how he gets lost inside his head imagining the entire world has loved him since he was nine years old, and that's why he's fucked up, not 'cause he's just a random ordinary fucked up guy that isn't Michael Jackson. There were a couple of other pieces about why some of the poets are poets and who inspired them and such, and I found those to be less well-crafted, but I was moved by and interested in their existence, as they definitely speak to a corner of the 100 Gods project.
So nifty.
