I know it's largely been panned, but I saw a commercial for Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette last night and am more excited than I could possibly say about it. While I suspect it may well be like AI or Moulin Rouge is for many -- an excessively ambitious and iredemeably flawed film that provides some measure of reluctant interest -- I have a strong, fundamental suspicion that it's going to manage to say something or other really important to me, whether it's because I just like costume dramas or that such things speak to the same interests that provoke the existence of Descensus or what, I really have no idea.

But I'm madly excited for it.

I think we watch films for a variety of reasons. They don't all have to be about veracity or enlightenment or art. I hope you enjoy the film. :)

Marie Antoinette is wonderful -- I saw it in France. It's probably SC's weakest film, and takes a disappointing turn towards the end, but the first 2/3rds or so are just stunning. Nobody does POV quite like Sofia Coppola.

Oh cool. I'm glad to hear you say this. I think the last time I was this floored by a preview was Vanity Fair and the preview, of course, disappointingly turned out to be the best thing about it.

Does the music thing work? I think the Cure stuff in the commercial worked surprisingly well, and from seeing what's on the soundtrack, it all looks like it will be less jarring than what I had been hearing people say.

I want to see this just for the sheer bizarre inanity of it. Ridiculous? Bring it on.

(Ouch. Bad Kirsten Dunst pun. Sorry.)

Every time I see a commercial for it, I start muttering at the television, "Oh, please don't totally suck! Please! Please don't totally suck."

I'm fairly certain I'm going to enjoy it, no matter how "good" it is. Costumes. Intrigue. Kirsten Dunst. Even if it is dreadful, it'll be a good dreadful, for me.

Good dreadful. (This is now my new identity. Heh.)

The music works brilliantly, as does the stylized acting. (I had a longer response to this, but LJ ate it. Bad LJ! No biscuit!)

I can't wait for it either, and even if it's bad, I know I'll love it.
