start at more or less the center of the top of your head. gather a handful or so of your hair. Separate the handful into three bunches. Cross the left bunch over the center, and then the right over the left. Holding the three separate bunches between your fingers, add scoop up some additional hair with your free hand and add it to the bunch on the left, and then do the same to the bunch on your right. Cross left over right and then right over left. Add more hair. Continue until you run out of hair.
For two braids, as above, only part your hair as if about to attempt pigtails, and start the braid at your temples and work down.
