There were a number of cheesy anti-feminist dystopian SF novels that came out the 1970s (e.g., Five to Twelve, Sex and the High Command); a common trope of those novels was that since the Pill and all that women's-lib stuff made men superfluous, men would just gradually disappear from the scene (Lamarckian evolution?). Perhaps the sharks are a harbinger of what other species will soon face....
