Jul. 6th, 2007 11:38 pmI stayed home tonight because "the house needed me" -- which is to say I should be doing stuff. I napped. Oooops. That said, I'm awake now, so now I work. Overall, though, working on the idea that while I'm an exceptional human, I am, just that, human. And there are only so many hours in the day
I did, however, stock up on groceries for the CT shoot -- I have GF breakfast bars, GF cookies, 3 bags of GF beef teriyaki jerky (one for each possible day of shooting), 3 cans of tuna (again, one for each possible day of shooting), cornchips, peanut butter, some candy. It won't meet all my calories needs or my idea of a a good food day in any case, but it will mean not falling over stupid if the only set food that it's safe for me to eat is plain rice and lettuce.
Apparently, next week is supposed to be ferociously hot, so being in an air-conditioned hotel isn't a bad thing, so othe than feeling out of touch with teh world and my house guest it really should be fine. Ideally it's two long days of shooting as opposed to three. That way I can fence Wednesday; although if I have to miss fencing (as I do Monday) on days where it will be 95, that's a convenience of timing.
It will also be interesting to see how people are about the long days in this context -- I suppose we'll all be about more overtime since there isn't the lure of home.
Bizarrely, I will probably finish my last letter to Patty for her curent Cyprus adventure on this trip. I also know one girl on the shoot from fucking Enchanted, so with any luck we'll be roommates as she's harmless as far as I could tell.

Date: 2007-07-07 04:26 am (UTC)I'm also an HP person. I helped plan and run Nimbus, and The Witching Hour. I was busy with grad school when Phoenix Rising happened, but I see you attended. :D

Date: 2007-07-07 04:35 am (UTC)babycakes is fantastic. Their brownies (the ones with sugar, not without) are FAnTAsTIC. I also like their cinnamon crunchy cake. The cupcakes are only mediocre, i think (too dense), but the brownies are really good.
Risotteria is a GF restaurant in the west village that does a great GF lemon cheese cake and increadible GF chocolate chip cookies. They also do a GF beer and pasta night on Tuesdays.
Gourmet Land is a chinese restaurant with a GF menu on 2nd and 82n. Also excellent.
Peter's is a diner with a huge GF menu on 81st and 1st
Sambucca on 72nd on the west side also has a GF menu.
For packaged goods Glutino is reliably good (and the only GF packaged pizza I like). The sanwhich bread that Whole Foods makes is good, as are their almost scones. Foods by George (which you can find at some Whole Foods) does great brownies and coffee cakes.
I think that's everything off the top of my head, but I hope it helps.

Date: 2007-07-07 04:58 am (UTC)We pretty much only shop at Whole Foods or the farmer's market because we are a little nutty about organic and locally grown food. And yours is the third rec I've had for the Whole Foods GF bread so I shall try it.
I've been reading about sorghum and rice flours all day. This is going to be an adventure.

Finally, I'd be careful of the Mi-Del GF products. Although they are ELISA tested I get some contaminations reactions form them sometimes. I have much better luck with Pamela's and Enjoy LIfe, both of which are made in a dedicated bakeries.

Date: 2007-07-07 05:12 am (UTC)I haven't been formally diagnosed yet. I see a new specialist on Monday. But I ate a whole bunch of gluten at once the other day and was spectacularly ill after months of feeling like lukewarm death. Then I cut gluten out and have felt much better. They think I also have fibro and arthritis so I am not sure what is going on in my body, but I would really like it to stop now. Well, that was probably more of my medical history than you wanted. eek.

Date: 2007-07-07 05:15 am (UTC)Because you have multiple stuff going on, a diagnosis is probably wise. I am "presumed celiac" because there was no way I was going through another several months of hell once I finally figured out what the hell was wrong with me.
I was never a big beer drinker, so I can't comment on the beers. Sorghum does seem to be in all teh baked goods I enjoy the most. You may also want to experiment with amaranth, which ahs a slightly peppery taste -- it's good for non-dessert items and works well also with things involving chocolate or apples for whatever reason.

Date: 2007-07-07 05:25 am (UTC)I know what you mean about diet. I will never eat another bowl of cheerios after what they did to me the other night. yipes. And going GF made me feel much better within 24 hours. My brain fog cleared up quite a lot.
I've never even heard of amaantha. Interesting. Thank you so much. This is marvelously helpful.
