It was bound to happen, because some people derive their enjoyment out of spoiling things for others, and have done so ever since they were very small and pulling other girls' hair in class.
Unless it was a lucky guess then I doubt very much it was genuine. You could probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of people who have had the chance to read the book or who have been told what happens: JKR herself, agent, editor and possibly publisher. I doubt that even anyone at the printers knows, in this day of electronic publishing.
Mind you, even the national newspapers are at it. On my f-list yesterday was a headsup that part of the first chapter had been printed in one of the UK daily broadsheets (and therefore would probably have been in the online edition, too) so I think unless you avoid the internet wholly, you're going to run into problems.
Maybe create a new and temporary default LJ reading filter and put only those you trust on it, until the book is out?
Thanks, but I already know what happens. Luckily, I'm not even into the HP series (never read a single book, actually; only ever watched the first two movies), but I did make a point of reading all the spoilers, just out of curiosity.
Thank you. I've already read all of the spoilers elsewhere anyway, just out of curiosity (I'm not really into the series; I'm more irritated as a writer myself about little twerps ruining the fun for others) but I'm sure RM appreciates the headsup :O)
