I've just put up my review of Quanitco, Greg Bear's near-future thriller about bioterror; it's science fiction, but often only by the narrowest and sharpest of margins. You can read that review here: http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977098226

Tomorrow, August 28th at 7pm EST, I'll be hosting a live chat with the author on A HREF="http://www.gather.com">Gather. I hope you'll join me as we talk about the book, the current state of the world and the current state of the SFF genre.

More information on the chat is here: http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977079807

and you can read an excerpt of Quanitco here: http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977079807

If you have not yet joined Gather yet and would like to, please click here: http://www.gather.com/inviteLanding.jsp?parentMemberId=51859&tc=12

Thanks, and I hope to see you tomorrow!

I'm afraid I borked it with the book giveaway by not checking my Gather inbox, and the time of the chat puts me squarely at work, but I'll probably poke my head in, and I've pointed a friend who's a Bear fan towards it. For one thing, I have to admit that after reading the excerpt I'm curious how his characters act in comparison to characters from similar but not speculative modern suspense novels.

[livejournal.com profile] yuki_onna recently brought up a question similar to the opening of your review, only her question was more what would the fantasy fiction look like in a fantasy-like world. It's still picking at my brain, how we use the non-real to tell stories.

I sincerely hope that I am back home by then, since I just got called to work on a film I haven't even heard of yet with the pooch.

Also, have you read Poison Study and Magic Study? They've stolen my last two night's sleep.
