dear idiot newspapers

(I'm looking at you, Los Angeles Times)

hijab and niqba ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

I don't even know why I know this. But if I do, you'd think a newspaper could figure it out.

I find I expect them to at least know as much as I do...so yeah that seems fair!!

I know nothing except that they are pieces of clothing. Googling didn't help much and Wikipedia only confused me further. Could you explain?

Hijab is the head covering. Niqba is the veil across the face. There's a lot of debate about both types of religious garments being worn in secular contexts in Europe. But to say the debate is about hijab under a photo of women wearing niqba is confusing, as a debate about whether one can cover their hair is, at least to my mind, a very different one than a debate about whether one can cover their face, although I tend to be of the mind that both are acceptable, although I understand the problems niqba presents in the world we're living in. The university I went to had a high muslim population and many wealthy female students from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, so I might be a little more used to sharing space with women in niqba (and really, full covering, there was one who kept her hands gloved in addition to everything else even when using the computer lab), than most people.

Thanks.
