The lessons of visiting a certain class of girl in NYC.

I didn't own a copy of hte oscial register, because what would a girl like me need it for? Still, I knew its details on my classroom peers.

You know, I think apart from one girl I can think of in particular, my classmates' parents were too young and nouveau riche to be like this.

And too Jewish. Way too Jewish.

There were a few Jewish girls one of whom had this incredibly garish (carried in on a carosel pony when the party was half over) Bat Mitzvah that the DAR-type girls were very put off by, and it was all just AWKWARD as far as I was concered, in part because I was only at any of these things because school policy required it.

I just read this and am delighted at how well it's written.
