It is a good question, but sadly I have to agree with with your commenters who went down the route of the public's need for ego-appeasement. Often people are intimidated by those more intelligent by themselves, and fear leads to all kinds of wonderous beliefs and social standards.

Well, that's my (only one degree-educated) thought, anyway ;)
