I have decided to run for the LJ advisory board. I need 100 people to post in support of my nomination to get on the ballot.

You can do so here: http://community.livejournal.com/lj_election_en/836.html

I posted in support of your nomination and put a banner in every single journal I have. I will make a more explanatory post at a later time. Please, let this somehow help.

Thank you. I really appreciate it. I decided to run with a bit of trepidation -- I know how these things can go wrong and/or be useless from previous personal experience. But I really do think I have a unique ability and set of situations that will make them listen if anything/anyone can.

I hemmed and hawed about it. I know how these things can go bad and the type of chaos they can create within a community. But I really do think I have leverage other people don't, and if there's anything useful to be gained from this advisory board for the LJ user base I can eke it out.

Done.

And, so that you know I'm not just some random serial adder, but a real live person, I even signed my name.

Hi, I'm Patty Cryan.... glad to get to know you. I've been thinking about adding you for some time, since your comments show up on many of my favorite people's LJs.

I think you'll bring balance to the table, and I hope you get the nod.

Thank you.

And yup, I checked out your profile and it seems half my friends list knows you, so I added you back. Welcome.

Yes! I even nominated you (to myself mostly) in a post way back when they announced this was happening. Glad to see you caught up with my smaller-than-any-political-movement-you-have-ever-seen.

Heheheh. Thanks.

I seriously thought about not doing it, as I know from personal experience how futile and frustrating these things can be, but I also think I have some unique leverage in this situation, and if anyone can make this thing have a point it's probably me.

Heh. Indeed. Thank you. They say I'll get the paperwork to official enter the race today, and I'll probably open a thread for questions tonight.

Feel free to post in TGTSNBN mailing list. I support members posting about other things they might be up to. Also a few of our members are LJ users.

Cool deal. Thanks. Once we move to the voting phase, I will do so (although I'm actually out of the country for part of it, which is a bit awkward).

Hello... didn't know you were thinking of running, actually.

I recently created [livejournal.com profile] ljunited, a community with over 100 members, with the goal of endorsing a slate of two qualified candidates for the upcoming LJ advisory elections, drawn from individuals who believe strongly in the original promises made to LiveJournal.

Specifically, we believe in:

Working with the community, for the community.
Honoring the status of every account. (That means supporting and championing free speech!)
Maintaining the uptime and performance of the site.
Staying advertisement free.
Never sending unsolicited e-mail.
Supporting the Free Software movement.
and ...
Protecting people's privacy.

We are very much concerned about the freespeech of LiveJournal's fandom community -- we think that slashfic creators and others have been made scapegoats for the desire to do something about the threat of adults victimizing minors. We are also very much concerned about the free speech of Russian members of LJ.

Our 100+ member community would no doubt be willing to nominate you, if you are willing to post to the community, say that you'll try your best to work towards these goals, and ask for our support. Ideally, you'd also check in with ljunited as needed, keep us informed of things, and use us as a resource on things such as strategy, influencing the other members of the advisory board, etc.

We want a candidate with as much clout, knowledge, and help behind them as possible, so they can ideally make a difference.

Our goal is to put some sort of organized force behind a candidate, capable of helping them out, unifying LJers, and, if necessary, using people power to resist decisions that ignore the advise given.

Does this sound interesting to you?

- Mark

Absolutely. (and I didn't know I was thinking of running either -- I had to really hem and haw about it).

And I was really hoping to find some voices to educate me on the technical/usability/uptime issues as seen from the view of people with other account types and usage interests than my own.

Tell me how to proceed, and I'll do it tonight (as I want to be slightly more cogent than I am being at the office now and all that).

I'm glad you did run, because we've been looking for a candidate to support -- and who would support our platform -- and you'd be a good one.

I had been approached by a few people to run, but decided I'd rather stay on the sidelines, while helping organizationally and informationally.

As far as how to proceed, I would join LJ United, and post to the community saying that you approve of and the community's platform, and that you'd like to join LJ United and be its nominee in the election. Let people know what you've done and what your views are on things like the promises that were originally made to LJers, the free speech rights of users, etc.

Frankly, I suspect you could get the community's approval very easily, especially considering you have several people there -- including me -- who would have lots of good things to say about you.

After that, it would be appreciated if you refered people back later to LJ United, making it clear that we have endorsed you as our candidate.

I seldom get involved in the workings of LJ (mostly lack of time rather than interest), but I'm glad I checked out the elections post since that led me to your LJ and thence to [livejournal.com profile] _riverside. Which I'd never even thought of looking for, but which has made my evening. :)

I'm delighted to see you're on the ballot, and I wish you luck with it.

Thank you. And [livejournal.com profile] wordsofastory and I are thrilled to have more people there (neither of us are the mods, but we're what passes for active users and that's how we met.) You know [livejournal.com profile] ellen_kushner has a journal too, yeah?
