- Having realized that if I do even 30 minutes of concentrated work a day Patty can come home to a shockingly awesome house in July, I've been in serious dealing with the house mode. Oi.

- Torchwood NY picnic tomorrow. I wasn't going to do anything costume-y, because sweating in a suit and the like really sucks, but they have a pterodactyl kite. Maybe you understand. Maybe I'm insane. [livejournal.com profile] marchek is bringing chocolate for the pterodactyl kite. The funny in this fandom way makes up for all the bad!fic.

- I found my pocketwatch.

- Yeah, so still working on the werewolves. And the Jack and Annie story I really wanted to be able to post yesterday (but she has a maiden name now -- so exiciting!)

- Will get to talk to Patty tomorrow during her weekly Internet access.

- Oh, hey, so I write this series of articles on the history of certain shoe styles -- so far I've done the pump, the sneaker, the ballet flat, the gladiator sandal and the platform shoe. And I'm running out of ideas. And I need two more in the short term. What other shoe sorts are there?

- Swamped. But okay.

- Hey, did anyone watch Swingtown last night on, I think, CBS? They're totally marketing it to by trashy and shocking, but I found it really sweet and melancholy and so like the world I watched through doorways in my childhood.

They have a pterodactyl kite.

Wing tips, saddle shoes, stiletto heels, wedge platforms, kitten heels, moon boots, riding boots, those shoes that women wore with 8 million little buttons?

Thank you. Wing tips. Wing tips are winning for this week. *happy sigh*

Can you do something about spats eventually? Or would that be slightly off topic?

Date: 2008-06-20 04:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
Probably slightly off-topic as it's for a shoe retailer.

Ah, yes that makes sense. I have a weakness for spats.

I wanted spats when I was 16. I got a tail coat and I wanted spats too. I could never find any that weren't very expensive.

Thank you!

I've been dreading the inevitability of writing about espadrilles.

I had to use a special tool called a button hook to fasten these when I was a kid: Mary Janes. Why are they called that? Also, Sorels (I think the generic name is "pack boots," the ones with the inch-thick wool felt liner and then leather/rubber outside).

I am loving swingtown. loving. the 13 year old kids are so dead on. love. also, girl with the hots for her AP teacher -- adorable and fantastically non-pretty pretty. Susan is so sad and beautiful and wide-eyed, and my heart just aches for Janet and Roger and their fear. the last few minutes were awesome.

It's really stunning isn't it? Do they know they have a show this good?

I'm not sure. they put it on in the summer, so it could be short-lived, but it's so well done, right down to the cans of food. there is a nostalgic element that people are ready for, like they were about the 50s when we were 10 or 12.

Yeah. It really really threw me back to my childhood in such a complete and total way. Those were the children I wanted to be and the adults when I just didn't know any better.

No. It's a column on the evolution of specific styles of shoes for a shoe retailer.

I keep expecting to hate it, and it keeps utterly delighting me. I'm waiting for them to start thinking too much and ruin it, but for now... it's really phenomenally good.
