D*C: TW, panel 1
Aug. 29th, 2008 06:46 pmQuick summary: http://kalichan.livejournal.com/147785.html
Off the top of my head:
- Usual stuff about how Gwen and Jack love each other but Gwen really needs someone like Rhys and Jack respects that followed by stuff about how Jack and Ianto's relationship is mostly physical -- although this was paired with earlier remarks about how into Jack, Ianto is so it seemed like a tonal quality issue as opposed to a "is it just sex?" issue.
- Someone asked what Ianto would do if Jack broke his heart. GDL said that it might be teh last straw considering "what happened with his last girlfriend."
- When asked about why people didn't film stuff in Cardiff until recently, GDL reminds us ther was nothing in Cardiff until recently.
- Adam kept coming up. He loves dark!Ianto and feels that Adam didn't just make that stuff up but that everyone has that sort of darkness in him and Adam was just playing on that.
- Hilarious story came up from the guy who was Tommy in To the Last Man -- that episode and Adam were shot at the same time. Which means Tosh's two bedroom scenes with men were done back to back, and there was much hi-fiving and sleezy jokes about it at the time.
- In the middle of telling some story or other GDL made this awful face and then explained that his ass had twinged. Hilarity ensued. He tried to explain but it all started sounding more and more obscene as he searched desperately for the word "sciatica" -- eventually all of that became clear and he said, "All right, none of you run to the Internet and post Gareth is totally Barrowman's bitch."
- On and on about how "Into the lift, eye candy" is his favorite line in TW ever -- he does a very good imitation of Marsters on that, and it's a little eerie.
- He was ridiculously gracious in the face of a lot of stuff that was either tacky and horrible (a rant on bad fan behavior later) or very moving and sort of overwhelming for the size of the panel.
- He looked great. I don't want to hear anything about pies. He looked really buff and not skinny and not like a starving actor kid and it was good.
- Apparently Countrycide was even creepy to film than to watch and Naoko Mori and GDL wound up acidentally headbutting each other at one point.
- Dude fro TtLM talked about working with Simm when he was 12 or 13 and about what a fucking maniac the guy was and how it was totally awesome. The audience was sort of desperately silent in a way that seemed to agree.
Much more later including my complete tirade about a very small subset of fan behavior at this one that I thought was ENTIRELY egregious.

Date: 2008-08-30 12:44 am (UTC)And my personal problem with Gwen comes way before Jack and Ianto were even hinted. Since first ep. I despised her whatever with Jack. So wrong. So, so wrong. I do hope that this 'development' in Jack and Ianto's relationship in season 3 - like Kalichan has said on her LJ - pushes the Gwack away for good. Can't take Gwen's show anymore. And will hate her even more if anything happens to Rhys. And obviously, hope it means more screentime for Ianto. By far my favorite character. <333333~
That said, GDL seems to be the greater guy fors con ever. I wish I could go to one of those. =/ I have certain questions to make people never seem to be curious about. Damn. And he does know _exactly_ which buttons to push regarding TW fans. I mean, most fans, at least. But even more, he KNOWS his character. He gets to understand Ianto deeply, and defend him assuredly and confidently because he knows where he's stepping, and all that, on a way I never saw any of the other actors doing. Actually, he captures the show's essence far better than the others. Like a fan, really. That makes things so amazing, perhaps the reason why Ianto stands out even being number 5 in screentime during first two seasons.
Creepy fans scare me. I feel embarrassed for them, really.
Just one minor note: GDL's fave line being one from Cap. John makes me giggle in joy. I love Cap. John. s2
Oh, so thank you for sharing your experiences at the con with us, people who can't get on a plane for that kind of stuff and tend to be really unhappy during those periods. Luckily there are good souls in the world to share it with us! =) I'll be looking forward for you next post, and the details - oh, the details! s2

Date: 2008-08-30 11:18 pm (UTC)Gwen really needs someone like Rhys
*twirls with joy that everyone (ok, JB, Julie Gardner, Eve Myles, and GDL) is on the same page in regards to Gwen/Rhys*

Date: 2008-08-31 12:32 am (UTC)Um. That was rhetorical, wasn't it?
(And no. I was the first of the two guys in line. I mean, I'd ask Gareth out, but he's depressingly heterosexual. I respect that.)

Date: 2008-08-31 03:36 am (UTC)So depressingly heterosexual, that he's comfortable with expressing the man love. Sad that, can't even call him closeted. Damn them and their well adjustedness.

Date: 2008-08-31 04:36 am (UTC)You know, I could believe that in S1, but I can't buy it for S2.
"All right, none of you run to the Internet and post Gareth is totally Barrowman's bitch."
Oh dear Gareth, you already knew how this will turn out.
Thanks for the reports!!

Date: 2008-08-31 06:09 am (UTC)If you want to meet up, I'm likely to be wearing jeans, a camo shirt, and a red beret tomorrow. I've got glasses like Ten's, and I'm the only guy I've seen knitting in line so far. I've also got a second tag I've been wearing over my con tag with a pic like my icon and the word "Lifty" on it. I'll probably be heading to tomorrow's panel around 9 AM to get in line. After that I'm not sure.
In any case, I'll be around until Monday hitting the DW and TW stuff.

Date: 2008-09-02 03:14 pm (UTC)I'm probably more sensitive about this stuff than a lot of people since I exist on both sides of the pro/fan line. But the girl with the flask was, to my mind, deeply inappropriate and disrespectful both to him and the other panelists, but to the audience and the fandom as a whole, and I know I'm far from alone on that opinion.
