Telling me that you know a gay person who likes Palin and that I should therefore calm down about your voting decision that you seem to be waving in my face as some bizarre display of supposed intellectual superiority does not, in any way, make you less obnoxious or less of a bigot. Similarly, bandying about your wild and crazy past does not, in any way, make your casual desire to restrict my freedoms less sinister. And finally, while it may not be personal to you, it's personal to me.

The Republicans keep framing this election in militaristic terms, so let me spell it out for you in words you can understand. You may be in this fight because you like to fight; more power to you. Believe it or not, I really get it. I wish I could be in this fight just for the frivolities of my nature too; might be fun. But I can't.

Elections like this are a fight for my life. And if you think that's hyperbole? Congrats on the luxury.

She terrifies me. She thinks she can pray the gay out of people.

Why would you want to??

I didn't think we could go much more right than we are right now.

I was direly wrong.

I wish I could say that I knew Obama would win in November, or that I had serious hope even....but after 2004? I would be shocked if it was even close.

Why would you want to??

As someone who denied my queerness for a long time b/c of my religious beliefs, I'll tell ya that there are LOTS of reasons people want the gay prayed right out of them. Sometimes we internalize the hate that others people feel for us. Having had that experience I "get" folks like Palin. I speak the fundie language, I know the secret handshake. That doesn't mean I want her running my effing country, though. Quite the opposite.

Ok, I can see how people would want to pray the gay out of THEMSELVES, but to randomly decide for them? Because her system seems to not take into account your desires at all.

I'm happy being gay. I'm more loved and more comfortable with my partner now than I've ever been. It's not like I didn't try the straight life, I was married for 7 years, it just turns out that girls make me happier.

What I don't understand is how that affects anyone but me.

I'm not even sure if I can remember WHY people think it affects them - I just know that they DO. I can't recall the arguments, probably because I think they're so much bullshit. I do understand, and remember, being devout and wanting to follow the Bible to the very letter. But I don't understand why Christians think their moral absolutes should be made into secular law. I want to say: all right, you think your religion is the The One True Way, but not everyone agrees with you. How dare you try to legislate morality? I keep saying that if we're going to write laws to keep people from sinning, we need to start throwing folks in jail for adultery. And oh wow, we can start with Mr. McCain ;-)

Also, doesn't legislating these things, much like teaching Creationism in science classrooms undermine the very idea of "faith"?

Very good point. I'm saving that one for the next time I need it.

Oooh, that's *especially* good comeback. I may swipe it for use next time it's appropriate. :)
