OMG! WANT!

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2008-09-26 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Right! I've a huge thing about old books too, so this is like all my obsessions in one object.

I know!
I'm just thinking about the crispness of the paper and the smell of the old leather and knowing some fencer had likely touched the pages and guh.

It's practically not safe for work.

I know! I know! I'm always hanging about in the Argosy and other rare book places here (where I've had some amazing finds because of stuff that wasn't valuable but was really old and of personal amusement value -- i.e., a French translation of Tacitus from the mid-17th century that I snagged for ridiculously little money).

Oh yes, I can easily see why you'd lust over it. Yowsa!

Oh, *whimper*.

the numerous engravings themselves are of increasing value.

Anybody who acts on this hint I shall hunt down and kill.

Here's my Ebay object of lust. Note that this Melbourne was both the unfortunate husband of Lady Caroline Lamb and the father-figure to whom Queen Victoria was devoted, precipitating the Bedchamber Crisis.

Argh, I know, right? Just because a book happens to have pretty pictures in doesn't give you the right to cut them all out. It's not on when you're three years old *or* thirty.

A complete Audubon set came on the market a couple of years ago and they said it was bound to be broken up into plates because nobody could afford it otherwise. Damn it.

My college has a double-elephant folio of Volume I (they didn't pay for it, so never got volume II) and it is kept in a large case with pages turned regularly. Awe-inspiring, and I mean that literally.

Apparently it's being discussed on fencing.net -- wondering if it's the real-real thing, not one of the re-prints. Possible sour grapes, of course, since everyone is also drooling uncontrollably.

It's not fencing without the wank.
