My endurance is temporarily shot. I will no doubt be fine by morning wherein I will succor myself with some fanfic editing (TW fic in the next 36 hours!), but the intersection of the utter bullshit, lying inanity of tonight's debate and my seriously ill, uninsured friends has been profoundly unpretty in my head.

Perhaps there will be eloquence tomorrow.

I can't tell you how sick I am of needing to be eloquent though.

Yeah, Elric and I have been thinking about our in-common uninsured friend, and betting that as soon as they can, the hospital will boot him out (apparently they were talking about "recovery soon" today) and fob him off because surely he can get better with rehab. Except there's little to no rehab if you're uninsured, and not walking means unable to get to the apt., and speech centers of the brain being affected when you're a proofreader means ...

I had to turn off the debate after the first 45 min to save my own blood pressure. The lies were off the charts.

TW fic would be nice. Yes, please.

I wouldn't be too hopeless yet. The hospital should be able to work with him based on his income. NYC hospitals deal with a lot of poor or uninsured people. I got a many thousands of dollars bill brought down to $150, for example.

Yeah, I'm already digging things out for mix CDs. I know him not at all, but his situation is terrifying, and if they do a PayPal collection to help with the bills/his health, I would be all about sending what little I can.

I think the scale is going to be such that even with those discounts, this is going to be bad. We're looking at weeks of hospitalization/rehab minimum, is the impression I've been given.

Thank you.

Pretty much the only music I have that Soren doesn't is stuff he totally hates. I can't tell you how much I'd love to argue with him about glam rock right now.

We're doing the final TW edits now, so hopefully today (fencing can mess with that, but shortly).

I am very very worried about the quality/duration of care issues, the health proxy issues, the racism issues that all now seem to be in play.

Money is bad. But we can do money. This community is great at that stuff.

But the rest of this? Oh god, it just so shouldn't be allowed!

Thank you. While I don't know if that would help in this circumstance, there are others where it certainly would (in part because do you know how hard it is for us to get a straight answer on gluten a lot of the time? -- nothing like taking pills that make you sick!)

I only know both of them via my friends/friends list. I wish I could send along something or do something. I feel very sad and angry reading about all this.

Yes, the race issues I saw mentioned (and which were echoed in a letter El sent out to a bunch of us, of her visit the other day) are unforgivable. The whole "you're not married" thing is bad enough (don't get me started on how this burns me no matter what the genders or combinations of numbers involved in a relationship/family), but assuming who's with whom based on race?! In 21st-century NYC? WTF?!!

Un-fucking-forgivable.

I'm hoping that not only medical durable power of attorney was taken care of, but things that everyone should have on hand no matter their age or marital status, like advance directives (aka living will) and will. I worked with hospice for years -- I hammered this home to people over and over again: I don't care if you're 20 and live with your parents -- you're not immune to getting hit by a truck, or having heart failure, or just plain dropping dead for no good reason (like my good friend did when she and I were in college together -- good heart, good fitness, dropped dead on the spot while jogging one day on campus for no reason other than her heart just plain stopped and wouldn't start up again no matter what).

They're going to need a lot of money. Over many years. He depends on language for a living. As well as being right-handed. Though that can be addressed more easily, of course. Not good. And this sort of thing doesn't rehab quickly or cheaply.

Does Neil know? I know he's back from tour as of tonight -- I know he knows our friend through both El and me (and probably others like PNH and TNH). I just realized he was on book tour while this all happened.

I suspect that unless someone called or otherwise spoke to Neil directly he doesn't know because tour is well, tour. I'm sure he'll find out pretty quickly now if he hasn't already, and I know he'll be back in town in not that long.

I'm finally going to be able to get over to the hospital tomorrow to at least provide Velma some company and snacks

You only need to be eloquent when you WANT to be. *hugs*
