- Back twinges? Kidney/bladder/UTI -- AYUP. So that's just swimming.

- Horrible Sunday mood? Has thankfully passed.

- It was 64 degrees here today! That's not right.

- Placed our holiday See's order.

- Made our Lunacon reservations.

- Who is going to NY*CC? And what if anything is going to be interesting about that this year? I sort of totally did not get it last year, despite almost being stabbed to death by Milo Ventimigila holding a display thingy.

- The Marriott is already sold out for D*C? Seriously? SERIOUSLY. Okay, at least we won't be in elevator hell. We'll just be in the Not Cool hotel again. But this time I'll be a big boy about it and all will be well. Yes. Yes, it will. Hell, I don't even know if I'm a Guest again this year, although the application is in. (Okay, not sold out -- con rate sold out and I am not paying $329 a night to be in the cool hotel because I am still at least a vaguely rational being).

- Random email from my publisher. Not sure what's up or what deadline might possibly be coming down on my head soon. I had stopped watching my Amazon numbers for a really long time, but wow, they are just swimmingly nice right now. I need to get on them about a royalty statement like yesterday, although I'm probably just breaking even on my advance now.

- This installment of IHNIIHBT keeps getting -- I don't know, more complex, more something. Kali has this idea we're going to be in edits or perhaps even have it posted by Thursday. I think she's out of her mind. But she's usually the realist with the schedule, so hey, maybe! Our desire to have the arc finished by the end of the year seems unlikely now. We're shooting for Jan 15, as we have to be into our novel by then (the plan is to churn a first draft out in six weeks).

- Have I started my Yuletide fic with the assignment everyone I know is jealous of? Nope. I do at least know what I'm doing and how I'm doing it, but really should reread the source material first.

- Firefly! War Stories! Oh crap, that was just slashtastic and hilarious. Inara fucks a girl; Mal and Wash get tortured. That's what we get for symmetry? Oh my god. Meanwhile, anyone got any good Mal/Wash/Zoe fics for me? I'll take Mal/Simon if they are actually in character, but I've yet to see anything because the expected OOC bullshit happens and, of course, Simon only really has eyes for his sister, but that's a separate topic.

- Meanwhile, if Patty and I were going to go on a totally non working vacay anywhere in the world late 2009, where should we go?

- Heading home to do some web work now.

I most likely do have Firefly recs of both varieties, though I'd have to search my other computer for them. Firefly didn't generate enough fic I was interested in (and trust me, I looked) to anally organize in a spreadsheet like I'm doing with TW fic. I'll have a look later tonight.

Though, before I do, what do you consider in character for Mal/Simon? That was one of the genres I most enjoyed reading (well, OK, rotate Mal/Simon/Jayne into any order and I was into it).

A certain level of suspicion, and both of them fronting like they are more functional than they really are. What doesn't work for me is Simon suddenly being the weepy girlfriend.

Well, crap. I looked, but I bookmarked authors and I can't remember what the names of the fics I liked were. This is way spreadsheets are necessary. *sigh* Man, that used to be my fandom, too.

you should go to Mongolia and sleep in a yurt! mainly because that's what I'd like to do.

orrrrrrr, let's see. Scotland is fun. Especially the northern islands, like Orkney and Shetland.

or, you know, just go to Nantucket.

If you want to get far, far away, there's always Bora Bora. It's beautiful and very remote. If you don't want to travel as far but still want warm sand and sea, there's the Caribbean. I'm told Barbados is nice, and it's not as overrun with tourists as some of the better known places.

What are you interested in doing? Cultural stuff? Nature stuff? Just getting away from it all? (I actually like the Mongolia recommendation. Ulan Battar is supposed to be a pretty happening place right now.)

I'd actually be sort of interested in Mongolia because it's part of my heritage, but I doubt it will be this trip.

I think we're interested in relaxing and are toying with the idea of going somewhere we've both never been before. Some cultural stuff would be good, or I'll probably get stir crazy and somewhat modern is probably also good, as she goes to remote, isolated places with poor accommodations for a living and I like modern plumbing.

Places I'd consider in your situation would be Costa Rica and Brazil in addition to Barbados. Maybe St. Lucia or Martinique if you want island stuff and don't want to go to a British place.

Looking further afield, New Zealand is beautiful. You might also consider somewhere like Singapore or Thailand. The Seychelles are also very nice at that time of year.

I highly recommend Dubrovnik! The Pearl of the Adriatic, in truth. The sea is warm, the beaches aren't crowded. The food is delicious (and will be very friendly to gluten free) and cheap. The accommodations are modern and affordable.

If you are wanting to go somewhere just to relax, this is the place. In fact, I recommend anywhere on the Dalmatian coast. There's lots of cool cultural stuff to do (castles to explore, even!) and none of it breaks the bank since Croatia isn't on the Euro, yet.

Really, I'm just itching to get back there myself.

Second. Most beautiful coast I've ever seen. Slovenia also pretty neat in a cheap Alp way, but on the Euro.

I was one of the Hellboy creatures last year at NY Comiccon, which was a fun gig, but it seemed pretty crazy commercial to me. I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed the event just as a fan.

I will be at both NY*CC and D'Con. NY*CC will probably only be Sunday or Friday and Sunday.

D'Con I am there for the long haul.

I'll be at NY*CC, but working.

I don't suppose I could entice you into a couple hours' volunteering at the booth?

You actually might be able to. I'm good at that shit and get a kick out of it, with without Patty at home I'll be a bit at loose ends.

Cool.

I'm trying to get enough people together that I can do a rota so no one's weekend is entirely engulfed.

I'm endlessly amused by your Firefly reactions.

I really must dig out my DVDs. Its been long enough since I watched them that my ability to quote entire episodes is diminishing.

O___o

I'll be at NYCC dragging along Goth kids, and making sure people don't get stabbed by actors from Heroes (which is oddly common at that con). I wasn't thrilled with the guests last year, but I'm hoping it's better this time around.

For a vacation, South Africa is nothing short of *spectacular* no matter where you go.

Whether you want to ski, go on safari, cultural trips, learn to speak xhosa, surf, whatnot, you can do it there. I know for a fact that you can find plenty of places to eat in and around Cape Town that would cater to your dietary restrictions, or you can do what I last did there and stay in a self-catering apartment (of which there are many many many of high quality). Transportation is cheap, the scenery is gorgeous, and best of all, you can sit on a sunbaked beach with blue water, sugar-white sand, boulders the size of your house, and penguins.

The rand is extremely favourable to the dollar, and South African Airways flies semi-direct from JFK to Johannesburg every day (via Dakar in Senegal).

Late 2009 is early summer, as well.

I'll be at NYCC plugging my soon-to-be-released book. If the negotiations with the network don't completely fall through, that is.

I might be going to NYCC -- we are hoping to promote Accidental Heroes there, assuming it is in shape to be promoted.

Please let me know if you find any Mal/Wash/Zoe -- that is probably my ultimate OT3, but I've never been able to find anything good.

Meanwhile, if you're interested, I have a story of my own which is present!Zoe/Wash and past!Zoe/Mal. Dunno if that's what you're looking for, but if you're interested, you can find it over here, yo.

Yeah - the back pain? I thought kidneys and/or UTI to myself but did not say anything because IANAD.

The other thing that came to mind was "that time on skiing holiday" when my brother's kidneys shut down for 24 hours - he gave himself alcohol poisoning after a drinking contest with a mate in Austria. You may or may not know that Austrian beer is LETHAL! He drank gallons of water and slept a lot for 24 hours and was back on his skis the next day!
