See, if that were the case... I'd trust season 1/2 RTD not to fuck it up, but I'm not sure I'd trust season 3/4 RTD.

Moffat hasn't really done any classic-style Who yet, so we don't know how he'd do with a classic Who storyline.

I trust RTD given what he was able to do with the latest Xmas special which I loved. My main concern is that I really would like not to see the Daleks again for a while, and the above were true, it would seem to me to be hard not to have them in it.

But, we'll see.

I liked a lot of aspects of the xmas special (although, skanky race and gender issues for the lose), and I do think RTD has the necessary passion about classic Who to make it work. But he does make a number of other mistakes.

I share your Dalek boredom, but IMO getting the Time War story would be worth suffering their annoying shrieky voices for one or two more episodes.

I justify the shortcomings of RTD by pointing out that he was effectively the one who got Who back on it's feet. His stories, while not perfect, are nonetheless compelling and what I really love about the New Who is that it adds depths that simply weren't in the original. (Which wasn't exactly the bastion of literary excellence either)

Yes, RTD does some things in his stories that make me want to chew my own foot off. I get past it and move on. Ultimately, I like the show, and I keep coming back for more.

And yeah, it's kind of impossible to leave the Daleks out of a Time War story. It's just hard to imagine where they'll go from Journey's End, y'know?

For me, I can forgive RTD his many sins and clearly personal obsessions in part because they are so obvious and in part because he really made the show about sorrow and loss and memory and how those aren't necessarily bad things. Those themes were always somewhere in Who, but he gave narrative to them, and I think it's fucking spectacular. The Christmas special worked so well, I thought, because it was really salving on those themes -- we've had so much emo!Doctor and so much tragedy that we've grokked that maybe the characters haven't (i.e., Face of Boe), it was nice to see the Doctor recognizing his situation and also being peaceful with it, as opposed to just thinking he deserved it.

Oh, you don't have to sell me on RTD - I've been a slavering fan of his since Queer as Folk, and I was thrilled when he brought the show back, and brought it back so well. I give him a lot of credit, and I have a degree of "fanboy made good" pride in him.

I just...don't quite trust him. He's let me down a lot recently, particularly as regards the women on his shows.
