- I just wrote 5 artcles about medical spa treatments. That was fun. Not.

- There's some unbelievably obnoxious article on ValleyWag about how LJ laid off 20 or 28 employees and the world is ending and it's all the fault of fandom. As far as I can gather, LJ actually did lay off some employees, but it was more like 12 - 14, not 20, and ValleyWag is notoriously sensationalistic and obnoxious. Yes, you should back up your journals, but you should do that anyway. THE SKY IS NOT FALLING. Most companies are doing layoffs now. Chill the fuck out.

- Why does this LJ shit always happen when Patty is out of the country?

- Meanwhile, have not heard from Patty since she left Muscat for Bat. We had heard she would have Internet at the dig location, but right now, I have no way of knowing. In fact, this is always the part I hate the most -- it's entirely nervewracking to me until she checks in from the site and I know all is well and what level of communication I can hope for. Right now, I don't even have an address for her! So all I can do is send emails and video messages from my phone.

- PMSing and full of largely irrational anxieties on many fronts.

It seems like the lay off was 13, not 20 (!): http://community.livejournal.com/no_lj_ads/83519.html

The swipe at fandom in the Gawker piece was incredibly special.

The fault of .. fandom?? wtf?

The fandomblame is getting rather old. I don't actually care what the fault was, but laying off a huge chunk of staff for an under-staffed company is probably overall not a good sign.

Yes, the tone of that article tipped me off. Still, it's grim news. It'll be interesting to see the issued statement.

Thank you for being a voice of reason.

I *am* sorry for those who have been laid off, whether it was 12 people or 1200, because it sucks trying to find work these days. My own partner has worked 13 months out of the last 52 because of the economy.

But the fact that LiveJournal is still up and running this morning is its own story.

You get that my "sky is falling" comment was sarcastic, right?

I mean, even if LJ died (on monday after I back my sh.t up) the world would go on.

Yeah, I posted this before yours I think. There are just about eight billion posts on my friends list indicating that layoffs mean LJ will die tomorrow, which is so so so not the case.

Yeah. Apparently I suck at the written sarcasm (which baffles me) but at least a couple other people missed it entirely, so I don't know.

We can just track this as the first OMG crisis of 2009, I suppose.

How does one back up one's journal? *frets*

Google for a program called LJArchive, which I like and is easy to use and sucks down comments too. Honestly, the main reason to do this isn't the layoffs, but the evil Russian hackers who have been hacking popular journals and deleting all their contents.

I went a head and copied your text from what you said about the lj panic. War of the lj, huh? : P

Thanks much for the tip! I've never really worried about that sort of thing, as my journal isn't exactly a hotspot, but those are just begging to become famous last words, aren't they?

Yeah. People have lost years and years of shit. I mean you heard about what happened to [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller, right?

I always felt much the same way when my dad was going to a remote site; once they're there it's more okay, but the travel is nervewracking, please let us know. GLad to see from later posts that you've heard from her.
