I've felt very sure I would be able to call Patty in Oman tomorrow, but I am having a hard time fiding a site to buy a calling card for Oman (says you can, go through the process, then you can for whatever reason -- or you have to wait days for approval for some unknown reason). Does anyone hve any recommendations for instant calling cards purchasable online?

I take it Skype (http://www.skype.com/) (and its super-cheap calls to landline phones) is not a viable option? I know it was blocked in Oman some years ago, but I gather it's since been unblocked.

I use Skype to talk to my family in Qatar.
As far as cards go, I haven't bought a card from this site to talk to them, but used one to call London. However, there are options for Oman and Oman cellular, so it may be worth a shot: http://www.callingcardplus.com/
Good luck!

The ones you placed on the head butlers plate, or slipped into the little door slot there for that purpose!
Me too. And I used to use the modern sort of calling cards all the time.

I would maybe try a neighborhood with a large population from that part of the world. If you have time to make the trip, you might have some luck in Brooklyn, maybe around Atlantic Avenue.

Don't you live in NYC? Wouldn't some of the Arabic immigrant communities stock them in their local stores?

I've used Pinzoo (http://www.pinzoo.com/) a lot to call friends who were visiting Africa, and I'm satisfied with their service, rates and connection quality. They apparently connect to Oman, so they're probably worth a look.

I use nobel.com calling cards for calls to the UK, but I've no idea if their rates are any good for anywhere else.

I particularly like that they offer a discounted plan for calling (UK) cell phones as, otherwise, the rate can be kinda steep for calling 'em.

Ask Patty if there are cards she can buy on her end. My father found it easier to buy cards in Afghanistan to call the US rather than the other way around. It might be easier to call from Oman to the states... worth a shot.

That was my first thought also.
