She was able to page me to tell me to call her back, although I don't think I can page her phone, although I just tried (ETA: hey, it worked!).

So we talked for about an hour. It was very laggy, but I heard about really cool stuff she found on the dig and about the car accident that screwed up their swimming plans and how Oman won a bit soccer tournament and people burned things to celebrate and about the cats that live around the dig site and the camels off in the distance.

She hadn't been feeling well earlier in the day, but was doing better now and generally seems much happier on the dig. I talked to her about the cruise thing, so we're go on that and all is well, eventhough phone is very weird for us in general.

Also: 3 weeks down, 7.5 more to go.

In my experience, SMSs will often work when there are problems with voice calls. Although it has to be said the only place I have ever had problems with them is the U.S. (that sounds like I have wider experience with this than I have :-)).

Well I don't have international calling on my phone -- I use a calling card with a local access number to reach Oman, so it's weird to me that sending a page to an international number is working.

don't blame poor oman. the GCC Cup is quite an event in the middle-east, and oman always got to the finals before it was swept away by either kuwait or saudi. this time, playing on the home ground gave it an advantage, i suppose.
