So....

Patty just called. She (along with about 7 or 8 people from the dig) has been hired for a job by the Omani government, which means she won't be home on March 17th (as previously planned) but now around April 3 or 4 (we should know in the next day or two).

While I'm somewhat bummed about this, the opportunity is amazing (interesting, good for her CV, in a great location, better accommodations, etc.), and she's getting paid scads of money (fascinating and novel for a grad student), and it's more time for me to do lots of work and get life set up for us for her return.

Meanwhile, she had an x-ray the other day, and her lungs are all clear. So even though she's still coughing a little, no more pneumonia.

I'm glad that she gets to have this opportunity, but I can see how it would be a sad for you to be apart from her longer. Hang in there.

I'm actually pretty cool with it. Again, she'll be home for about 14 months once she returns, which is the longest we'll have had thus far, so I much prefer this to her having to leave again sooner.

Small boo, but great big YAY!

Congratulations to her!

Also, extra glad to hear about her health. :)

Gosh. I mean, that's a wrench that she's going to be away for longer, but that's great for her, and good to hear she's well again. Woo!

While I'm sorry she won't be home as originally planned, that does sound like a great opportunity. Also good to hear about her health!

I'd call that mostly good news, though I agree it's a bummer she'll be away a little bit longer. Foo.

Yeah. I think we're both pretty happy about it. The downside is small, the upside is large both in the immediate (among other things, it makes up for how much dig time she missed being ill) and in the long-term (CV, future job placement, etc).

Very glad Patty's doing so well, in terms of both health and career. Sorry you're going to have to miss her for a bit longer, though.

That sounds like an awesome opportunity. Kudos to her.

And having her home for 14 months will rock I'm sure.

Sounds like great things pretty much. Though, I know the time away will seem like forever. Still, kudos all around and hurray on the clean lungs!

Oh that's so great for her professionally!

Will 'better accommodations' mean 'more regular contact with you'?

Well, she'll still have her awful mobile there, but there will also be a phone in the hotel room, meaning a better connection when we call, and there's supposed to be an Internet cafe like a block away.

Also, I've just realized that hotels have addresses, and that I might, just to be ridiculous, FedEx her something there, since we've been so deprived of letter writing communication.

Yay for good Patty news! I'm glad things are going well for her. Boo for a longer separation, but the benefits far outstrip the down-sides.

OMG, a grad student in archeology actually getting *paid*? I feel faint! I think my dad got a very feeble per diem once or twice that about paid for food (in Central America, which isn't saying a lot). Wow. And accommodations that aren't a tent or trailer equivalent? Luxurious!

Obviously this sucks for you a bit, but at least it's for a very good reason and not because she's still sick.

Basically it's some thing where they are building a new hotel and need to do some check for artifacts before the site is destroyed. The folks who were supposed to be doing it did nothing and there was some bribery scandal, so some sort of RFP was put out that her dig team submitted to and then got it. So it's like 26 days of work with no days off, hotel accomodations, air conditioned trailer on site and good pay and a per diem and the gov't pays the fees on the airline ticket changes.

Oh, so like rescue archeology or getting paid to scan a site before a building permit can be issued - nice! That's one of the few areas of dirt-grubbing that do actually get paid; it can be frantic work, but often very interesting. Dad did a few rescue surveys in Virginia and enjoyed them.

And it's good to hear that places like Oman now have laws requiring an archeology sweep before building; I would have thought that was still a pretty first-world kind of thing, but I understand they're making a lot of progress on that in many of the Middle Eastern nations with scads of valuable historical resources.

And hotel and A/C, wow, that's pretty fancy! Great stuff for her and her team.
