So fucking sad. And what a lame cliche to say, but it really is. And, truth be told, hitting me strangely because of a past bit of fandom involvement.

But ugh. Just, awful awful.

Christ, that's terrible. I didn't know she was married to Liam Neeson. My heart goes out to their family.

So odd ... reading this (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2009/03/18/ST2009031803239.html) and it sounds like she was fine after falling down on a beginner's slope, then her condition rapidly deteriorated later. Didn't know head injuries worked like that. I thought they were immediate.

Nope. This happens sometimes, which is really, really frightening. "Dead and Talking" I've heard it called.

(CNN has it as "talk and die" here: http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/03/18/brain.injury/index.html)

A brain surgeon was saying 'talk and die' on Canada AM this morning.
I don't think we skimped on the sad.8(

It happened to one of the producers of Highlander. He slipped and hit his head ice-skating, felt just fine, and died the next day. Horrible.

Thank you. I was just on line to look for a source I could point to.(Canadians are castigating themselves because...it happened under our aegis.)
What a ...waste. There should have been more.

The circumstances are so strange. I always find myself unsettled when someone just dies out of the blue.

The really scary part is that she obviously thought she was fine, and then all of the sudden, was dying.

What a great shame. And I'd never seen anything about the "dead and talking" phenomenon you mentioned above. That really is frightening.

Well, that's right in my backyard, almost literally. And makes me think I should get a helmet next time I should go skiing. I had no idea who she is but that's terribly sad.

This IS really sad. I had a bad feeling about how the initial fall/hospitalization was covered in the news yesterday.

Plus, new scary worries about what seem initially to be minor head injuries.

ah geez....I was seeing blurbs about this on CNN during breaks at work. They never made it sound bad...I had no idea it was *this* bad.

*sigh* I've enjoyed her movies...sad that there won't be anymore.

The really tragic thing is that the classic "talk and die" type of injury is the most treatable of the significant head injuries. But there's a very limited time window for successful intervention; you only have about an hour from the time the person starts to deterioriate.

People have done studies, looking at the radius out from a neurosurgical centre, mapping likelihood of survival against distance/time it takes to get there. The odds drop dramatically once you hit that hour travel time.

So sad. My thoughts are with her family.
