- Several people I know are planning to jump out of a perfectly good airplane as part of Operation Freefall: The Two-Mile High Stand Against Sexual Assault. [livejournal.com profile] curlyinthecity, who I don't know but is a friend of a friend, is still working to meet her fund-raising goal of $600 in order to participate. If you are so inclined, you can donate here. Funds go to SOAR and RAINN.

- Also raising money for rape recovery and anti-rape efforts is [livejournal.com profile] shadesong. She's seeking sponsorship for the 5K Walk for Change which benefits the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center.

- Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] marrus, someone I knew when she lived in NYC and had the pleasure of seeing again at D*C in 2008, has put prints of her beautiful artwork on sale to raise money in the face of impending medical expenses. The sale will run until the first week of April.

- [livejournal.com profile] redstapler reminds us that the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund auctions rare comics items on an ongoing basis on Ebay. The CBLDF assists comics creators, vendors and collectors in protecting their first amendment rights to free expression.

- [livejournal.com profile] con_or_bust is a community dedicated to raising funds for the Wiscon Assistance Program which is focused on helping PoC with financial need get to Wiscon.

- [livejournal.com profile] verb_noire is a new publisher run by some awesome LJ'ers. Their focus is publishing work with PoC and LGBTQA protagonists. Right now they are raising funds to launch the press, looking for volunteers and getting the word out. Writers and readers of all colors and orientations should be excited to see what comes out of this project.

- [livejournal.com profile] orlacarey is walking in a 60-mile, 3-day walk to raise money for fight breast cancer. Her fund-raising goal is $5,000 and she needs your help; so does her walking buddy. Personal note: My maternal grandmother and her sister both died of breast cancer; a cousin aged-forty on my father's side of the family died of breast cancer; my ex's mother died of breast cancer; last year my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer (she's doing well!); I have friends who are fighting breast cancer or have kicked its ass in the past. Breast cancer is scary! Support Orla & co.!

- Raising money? Selling stuff? Making art? Let us know in the comments to this post.

Oh, me! I'm a rape crisis counselor with the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, desperately seeking sponsorship for the 5K Walk for Change. My post about it is here.

(Hi. Got here through the lovely [livejournal.com profile] elionwyr. :) )

Excellent. I'll add you up into the main body of the post (that's usually what I do with the people who are in early, as folks will catch it on their friends list, and then I add others to newer posts later).

Wonderful! :) Thank you so much. BARCC means a lot to me, and this is their main annual fundraiser.

Thank you for the plug. I'm really looking forward to seeing you again at D*C!

Would love to have a chat & a cocktail in the somewhat-cloistered sanctuary of the Green Room if you can find the time...

Yes. Absolutely. Now that I know _how_ to do Dragon*Con, this should be perfectly managable as long as it's not during peak elevator times!

Wow, you're right. One DOES need to learn "how" to do that show. It's just too damned big not to know how to pick & choose.

Here's how I do it:

Wake up earlier than I want.
Get fabulous.
Grab food.
Hit the art room from 10 to 6, talk, talk, talk, paint, talk, paint, sell art, talk, talk, sell art while painting & talking.
Flee back to my room.
Jay puts a food in my mouth.
Take out contacts.
Doze for 45 minutes.
Go up to the Green Room.
Talk, talk, talk, talk, reconnect, drink, drink, talk, network, talk.
Leave around 1:30.
Go back to room, shower, sleep.

Repeat;)

You have the awesome benefit of recurring schedule!

For me, I've learned I _have_ to come down the night before ... an early flight and straight into it Just Doesn't Work.

Also, this year I think Patty and I will step away from the con more. An hour of shopping in downtown Atlanta last year saved my sanity.

No more chasing after the cool parties. I'm hanging at the Marriott bar and waiting for the awesome to come to me (that has been the lesson of cons this year).

To judge by the awesome that came to you at the Marriott bar at Gally, not a bad stratagem indeed!

Marriott bar worked for us the last two times we went to D*C.

Miss M received forms for our Backpack Buddies project/Trikeathon today, but I wasn't planning to solicit online.

1. i am usually donating an item or two at the conventions i am at to fight cancer.

2. most of us are due to get a colonoscopy. dont put it off, remember crohns and irritable bowel disease and celiacs raise your risk.

3. the comic book legal defense fund also gets money from the sale of all Neil Gaiman themed perfume oils at Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab

My friends [livejournal.com profile] jbru and [livejournal.com profile] erickavan are in foreclosure on their home due to [livejournal.com profile] jbru having been out of work since July until very recently. Bad enough, but made even worse because their home has been customized to for [livejournal.com profile] erickavan (who is disabled) so losing their home would be beyond awful.

Anyway. Fellow friends and fans have an auction going and other fundraising efforts are noted at [livejournal.com profile] accessiblehouse. Which reminds me I need to add some more TV DVDs and maybe some rare TV stuff to the auction. There's probably better wording of all this in that community or in the journal of [livejournal.com profile] cakmpls who has been doing the bulk of the organization for it.

We will be soon putting together something to help raise money to pay for the several thousand dollars it's going to take to fulfill the out-of-pocket expenses to pay for Elric's upcoming cancer surgery & treatment.

What that will be is still up in the air. I'm going to start going through my library (::cry::) and see what signed first editions I may have that might fetch a few dollars.

I never thought I'd have to sell off my possessions to pay to keep my husband alive. What a world.

I'll post (and let you know) when I get this set up.

I'm sorry to hear this is going on. My writing partner's father has this whole brain cancer thing going on right now and the OoP stuff and the fighting with the insurance company stuff is just insane.

Let me know what to link to when you've sorted this and I'll post it up.
