fannish diversity

For a WorldCon presentation from [livejournal.com profile] verb_noire [livejournal.com profile] karnythia is putting together a "faces of fandom" sort of slide show to demonstrate just how diverse fandom is and why representation is so important. If you're willing to be included, check out her post.

Once again, [livejournal.com profile] verb_noire is a new press dedicated to publishing SF/F work with PoC and queer protagonists.

And the irony?

For several Worldcons, there was a 'Why is Fandom So White?' panel with...wait for it...an all-Caucasian panel.

Including one of the major flashpoint peole for RaceFlail'09. No no, not naming names. Just sayin'.

Based on my own utterly horrific experience as a panelist on a similar such panel years ago at LosCon, I declined to attend. Let's just say that if you play the role of Sensitive New-Age White Guy and expect the PoCs on the panel to 'edumacate you 'bout whitey,' it is almost 100% guaranteed to:

a. make you look like a jackass

and

b. NOT get you laid afterward.
