Amazon petition
Apr. 12th, 2009 04:16 pmThe list of books involved is now really long.
It seems it's happening based on key words and search terms. Stuff we now know to have been hit with this includes a bunch of YA books, Jacqueline Carey's books, a number of biographies and autobiographies (including John Barrowman's), a range of self-help books, and even books from both conservative and liberal perspectives that address the topic of homosexuality in terms of the Bible.

That would be EXCELLENT. (And I'm sure Fry *and* Laurie would get a kick out of it.)

Date: 2009-04-12 09:29 pm (UTC)This is going to blow up on Amazon. And they have to, as far as I am concerned, do more than fix it. Public apology and donations to some sort of GBLTQ or freedom of speech group.

Did they think this was going to go un-noticed?

Date: 2009-04-13 03:10 am (UTC)My concern with this petition is that the language used doesn't include the trans and bi books impacted by this new policy (and there are many on the lists you linked too, most of them non-fiction). I am outraged by the situation and want to do my part with pitching in for change, but I don't feel comfortable signing a petition that doesn't speak to the full scope of the problem.

From friends, I have recently learned about the new Amazon policy of removing any book with gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered characters from the rankings, *even if those books are NOT adult material*.
There are are number of books involved that have gay characters that are aimed at young adults, so there have no sex. Others that have gay or transgendered character for adults that have no sex, just happen to have characters that are gay or transgendered. Yet they were unranked in this censorship. One of the authors are were unranked is a friend of mine, Alyx J. Shaw. She has three books that I can't even find anymore. And I wanted to buy them.
This is both extreme censorship and discrimination. And to have pulled this around a holiday weekend when you think no one would be paying attention is wrong. Some of the books you unranked and hide away were bestsellers! They were making you money! And the other books will never have a chance if one can't find them. I'd say it's not very smart of a bookseller to carry books that will sell and yet hide them so people can't find them. You don't make money that way and you tick off a lot of people who would buy those books and more.
Until Amazon.com changes this horrid, bigoted policy and returns the books to their rankings, I will not spend any money with you.
A "glitch in our systems"??? Oh, really???
