Susan Boyle is in her 40s. She lives alone, with her cat, and says she has never been kissed. As a child, she was apparently the target of bullies because of a disability.

And then she went on reality TV in Britain. People were surely expecting a punch line, but probably not this one.

To say that she has a voice and a half seriously understates the case.

I saw that earlier today and had tears streaming down my cheeks. That voice, that choice of song, the reaction of the crowd? Awesome.

I saw that over the weekend! And I found the full length video on YouTube that includes the judges' verdict (no surprise!).

I will find some way of following that even here in the US.

One thing struck me when I was watching it last night. Two of the judges said something to the effect of 'When you came in here, everyone was against you', which struck me as really strange. Not 'feeling sorry for you', not 'certain that you were going to make a fool of yourself', but 'against you'. It was like they were so shocked that their internal filters against admitting to beating up on the weak kids were offline.

Susan Boyle, on the other hand, went out there and nailed it all the way into the wall. I'm a sucker for an underdog who goes down swinging, and I'm an even bigger sucker for an underdog who wins.

This made me very happy last night when I watched, and it made Soren very happy today. Yes, and yes, and yes.

Odd thing -- the moment she started singing I thought "Elaine Page." And then I found out Page is her idol.

Anyway, good for Lady Boyle. Maybe she'll do "Nobody's Side" next.

*standing ovation*

And THREE CHEERS to her for having the balls to stand up, face down the panel and the audience, and hit the ball out of the park, out of its skin, and out of this world.

The TONE of her voice is really extraordinary.

And how lovely is it that you could tell she had no real expectation of getting through, that it was enough of a victory to have performed.

I hope she wins.

I saw this last night and I bloody love it. It's not the sort of music I normally go for but my god, she has a voice and I love the way she totally slays the audience.

Also, I'm from the next county over (she's West Lothian, my folks live in Midlothian) and a lot of the older women do look and act just like this - the tight perm is an archetypal Lothian look. It makes me laugh to see a 'wee Scottish wifie' confounding everyone's expectations like that.

You would think after Paul Potts last year that they would learn.

Thank you, now I'm crying. This is really unfair to do to someone with the menses from hell ;)

And WHAT a perfect choice of song, eh??

There is something so incredibly BEAUTIFUL about her.

I've never been to the UK

but I found it odd that it seemed they got this idea that she was not allowed to aspire to be anything or to WANT anything. Why can't she aspire to a career like Elaine Page?

If it pleases her to practice singing, why isn't she as welcome as anyone else to TRY?

I guess I'm just naive, but I didn't get that.

Because she's not a size three and 16, that's why.

I intended to be dripping with sarcasism there, but right after I typed that I thought about it. I think there is a bit of truth in that. The mainstream media is very geared towards young and pretty. I know it is in the States. Not sure about UK.

I'm a fan of independent musicians, and they are all types. But I'm not sure how many would ever be offered a contract by a big label EVEN if they were to selling a million copies online.

I wonder if she simply didn't have anyone to encourage her in her singing.

In Dallas, Texas there is a community radio station, where they will play CDs from independent musicians as long as they make a contribution to the station. I've told a few friends about that. Where else can you get some airtime? Not in the mainstream radio, that's for sure.

And when it comes to radio and CDs, looks really don't matter, IMHO.

Anyway... enough with the babbling...

I think the state of art has been broken for a while. It's the reason we don't have the caliber of musicians and artists that we did before.
It seems to be too tough for the real artists to make a living.
It all seems to have more to do with who is selling them than what they can do.

I think it was *really* impressive that she made that jerk Simon smile. Yup, the singing was good, getting a smile out of Simon was the icing on the cake.
