This past week I was reading Russell T Davies' The Writer's Tale about the fourth season of Doctor Who, and one of the things he kept reiterating was the obligation he felt to be visible as a gay man, the importance of visibility.
Speaking of the book, it's a fascinating picture of writing season 4. It's a series of emails between Davies and Benjamin Cook about the writing and production process as Davies is working, so there's a lot about writing and television production. I strongly recommend it.
Yup, I have to get it. I've heard about bits and pieces of it from folks, and most of my reaction has been "that's how I work!" (the one song, on endless repeat!)
One of the really fascinating aspects to me was the progression of the scripts for the episodes he wrote, which are included, and the ways that a suggestion by Cook or some external factor, like the illness of the man who was to play Donna's father, would send the story in a new direction.
