We're used to the Doctor regenerating...

And isn't that strange and wonderful? When you think about it, putting a new actor in the lead role and asking you to accept him as the same character but also different...that has to be one of the most insanely risky things any show has ever done. As Tom Baker once apparently said, Patrick Troughton deserves respect for selling the idea in the first place.
